The wife's sh!tmobile died this morning, and I'm fed up, so I want to buy her something she likes. We found a 10th anniversary Miata MX-5 for a good price, and we are going to check it out tomorrow.

Having never posted on the japanese boards (or read them for that matter) what do you all think of these cars?

She likes the styling, and I want something nice and sporty for her to practice on so she can someday drive the Esprit without me having to take tranquilizers first.

Opinions on the Miata, please.

Thanks,

Mad Mike

Edited to add: I believe you folks don't get the higher HP engines anymore...this would be a 1999 with the 140HP lump. Still, any opinions you could offer...

Mines a '98 UK 1.8iS, 130bhp i think (or maybe 120), had it 2 months and its just perfect for me.
Handles well, doesnt let me down, fairly nippy, cheapish on insurance, not too expensive to fix, looks good too....
Go for it... i think its a good car to start off with RWD to practice going round those bends.

Pretty much *all* MX-5's are a hoot to drive.

Not the fastest things in the world, but that's so not the point....

Go for it fella. I nearly bought one myself.

OK, so get this. After talking to the dealer last night and his assurance to me that absolutely nothing was wrong with the car, I drive down this morning. Wait ten minutes for him because he's out in the car running errands. When he gets there, the car looks great...except it has a black roof, and I know the anniversary editions all had blue. So right as I'm about to ask him why that is, he drops it on me. "The reason the price is so low", he says, "is because it was in a minor accident, but it's been totally repaired." So I asked him if the title was clean, to which he replies "It's a salvage title." He then launches into a song and dance about how that doesn't matter to the DMV, the insurance co, etc, which is all bullsh!t.

I just handed him the folder with the pictures, etc , in it and said "I'm buying any car with a salvage title" and walked right out. Super pissed. The a$$hole should have told me on the phone.

Anyways, undaunted I went to the Mazda dealership and bought this for Kasia:

Very fun to drive, I thought. Much more cramped than the Esprit, so it's good it's HER car, but I know I'll have fun every now and then. And it's a good car for her to learn on.

The MX-5 is proof of something I've said for a long time. It's not about who's fastest. It's about who's having the most fun.

Confuscious say: Bigger speed make Bigger grin..
Nice car tho. Glad you told that guy to shove it too. Dont ever buy a salvage title unless youre gonna scrap it for parts, you simply dont know the quality of any repairs done to em. Usually the cheapest possible.
Enjoy the motor!
