im looking at buying toyota supra mk3 probably a 90/91 one.

ive found some buyers guides on the web but i thought i would get your opinions as well.

firstly, and most importantly, are they any good?

i know of problems with the head gasket, but how concerned should i be?

also should a high mileage one be avoided at all costs or, is it not too much of a problem?

I've got one, a 1992 K Reg Turbo.

Head Gaskets were a problem, mine blew before I got it at 68k, and Toyota did a 3k engine rebuild on it

Rust should not be a problem, these things are build like tanks.

Only other things other than the head gaskets are exhaust manifolds coming away from the head.
This usually happens on the rear cylinders.
It will blow from cold then as the car warms up will quieten down as the gap closes.
The head would probably need helicoiling, about a £700 job.

Rear tailgates can leak, either from around the lights or from around the glass/trim.

Oil leaks can appear, either from the intercooler or the cranskshaft seal.

Front suspension bushes can go, and Toyota will need to replace the whole lower wishbones.
If the car goes bang on corners, this will be the reason.

Other than that the cars are pretty much indestructable, mine is on 124k and underneath it is like a virtually new car.
I think it is still on its original exhaust

Go for as later car as possible and get the Turbo(about 50 bhp more than the NA version).
Most Turbos are auto's, but they are very good boxes, and given the choice I'd have it over the manual.

The Turbo was introduced in 1989, and in 1991 was updated with 5 spoke alloys, eight speaker Stereo and apparently side impact bars in Oct 91.
Interior colour changed slightly at that time aswell.

Through Toyota an A service is about £140 a B £250 and a C a bit more

I am having mine done by one of my mates Dad, He has a garage in Enfield and has a concorse Monza & Ascona.
He has also done Stag's, and TVR's.
It is with him at the moment for a service and hopefully a Cam Belt change.Toyota Torque these things up to phenomenal amounts.

That's about it really, a solid, cruising machine that will happily do 90mph all day, and be bullet proof reliable.
There is a story with one with 300k on the clock!!

Nothing wrong with it at all.

Has a sports/power mode on it aswell.

It is nice to have the auto on a big car, you can drive one handed and one footed if you want

I have never heard of Auto boxes having problems.

See if you can get a copy of August's Japanese Performance as there is a buying guide there for the mk3.

I should be picking my car up from its service tomorrow or Thursday

There's some slight misleading info in the above posts, the head can be helicoiled with the head in situ and so wont be anywhere near £700, most of us do it ourselves as its quite simple.
BHG's are a problem, they really need replacing with a MHG and thats end of problem. If Toyota done it it probably would cost somewhere near the £3k mark, but then they wouldnt fit an MHG as its a non-toyota part.
Get yourself over to www.mkiiisupra.net/bbs for a complete dedicated forum to the mkiii supra.

When they did mine they said they couldn't get to the rear threads easily so the head had to come off.
That cost £707!!

Just got mine back from a Service and timing belt change, brake pads etc (not from Toyota btw).

He said that the fan shroud was broken and I really needed a new one.
There was a 3 day waiting time from Toyota so he glued the original up.

Less than 100 miles later at Heathrow on Sunday, the A/C starts to blow hot air, stranger still the temp is nearly reaching the red part of the gauge. It never goes above half way and this was 3/4 of the way up the dial.

I stopped the car after a while, popped the bonnet and to my horror there is the fan shroud jammed in the fan.No wonder why the by thing was close to overheating, the fan wasn't spinning and the smaller electric fans were scraping the shroud aswell.

I had to spend about 30 mins ripping out the remains of the shroud before I could drive home

Luckily the car has not suffered for it, but I would not have been amused if it had overheated and things had started to go pop.

I have phoned Toyota and they have quoted around £100+VAT for a new one.
Strangely they wouldn't order one for me over the phone even though I was going to pay with a Switch card

When it comes to customer care, Toyota are nearly as bad as Peugot.

I don't know how they get their so called "good" reputation.

I was on the UK Supras site a year ago or so, but that came to a grinding halt, and no new events or anything are shown on there now.

Will have a look.

Strange, whenever I dealt with Peugeot about my old 205 GTi they were more than helpfull. Even sent photocopies of various bits of the owners manual for me.

Then again this was Peugeot themselves rather than a dealership....

...and Toyota in Henley-on-thames were always fantastic when I had my imported MR2 turbo.

My local Toyota dealer is excellent.

No problems with the import. Happy to advise on stuff. And hasn't charged me for stuff when he could have done.....

I went to a dealer in Romford, about 4 years ago to get my CD Tape player quoted on for a repair.
They said it would be a certain amount of time and be £20.
About 2 weeks overdue, they contact me say it will be £300 IIRC to fix
They then charge me well over the £20 they quoted.
What was wrong with it??
They didn't say, or give me a report.
I requested one about 3 times and finally they give me a fax that is so unreadable it was an insult to give it.

Went to a dealer in Chelmsford about my blowing manifold gasket, who promptly took £250 off me put new gaskets on and three weeks later it was blowing again.

They wouldn't say they had misdiagnosed the fault and said the manifold was banana'd.
They would only give me £30 off the bill for a new manifold & new set of gaskets.

I went to a dealer in Wickford who then diagnosed the bolts coming loose and helicoiled the head.9 months later it was blowing again
They put a bolt in and has been o.k ever since.

The same dealer at a later date replaced the lower wishbones on the front and fd up the tracking scrubbing the inner edge down to the canvas on both front tyres

My Dad had bought an MR2 from this garage and had traded in another vehicle.
6 months or so later the Lambda sensor went so he took it back to them under warranty.
They said sorry, because we gave you such a good trade in we didn't give you a warranty when you bought the car

My Dad phoned up another dealer re. aircon regassing pressures, they didn't know and gave them customer service number.
Customer service refused to give my dad information because he wasn't a dealer, the technical team only talk to dealers

My Dad enquired about timing belt change, they quoted £350, when I called the next day it had gone down to £290!!
I phone a dealer in Romford and some muppet there said, we've only got the Celica listed, I imagine it will be about £150

I won't even go into my brother's situation with a gearbox that they wouldn't fully cover under warranty on his MR2 with this dealer

So that is my experience with Toyota
