Hi all,

I'm looking into importing an RX-7 and wonder if anyone has any advice/recomendations on spec and cost.

Monday of this week I attended an auction in Southampton hosted by a1carauctions.co.uk and I was very interested in seeing how cheap (it seemed cheap to me!) the various jap import models can be.

There were not any RX-7's, although there were numerous MX-5's and they did appear to be several thousand pounds below what you see them advertised for.

Granted, you need to do a little work on them as the cars displayed are as they were straight off the ship however they are still a lot cheaper.

Has anyone ever bought a car from a1carauctions before and was it ok ??!!

Many thanks for your time
Stu

Being a Yank, I can't offer much advise regarding the auction company, but it seems the 1995 RX-7's are much more relaible than the earlier models. Make sure the oil is changed frequently!

could you tell me what time and which dock gate these auctions are held? I am Southampton based and wouldnt mind popping down for a ganders....

when you say that the cars require a "little work" do you just mean in the sense of some TLC - I assume they are UK registered etc by that stage?...

The auctions are held every Monday at Dock Gate 8, viewing is from 9am. The auction commence's at 11am.

The cars themselves are as they were when shipped, i.e. you need to get a few things done such as fog light, radio etc.

Most of the cars have a few bumps but nothing worth worrying about !!

cheers for that - might take a gander down there as i only live down the road.

so are they UK registered and tax/import duty paid by that stage? All you have to do is get them to UK spec re the fog lights etc?

Yup, all duty is paid the only things needing changing are the fog lights, speedo etc.

I'm probably gonna head back to the auction in a month or so's time.

It may be best to check out their website first - www.a1carauctions.co.uk - as you can download the latest stock of cars available and check out if there's anything specific your looking for.

Hello,

I went to Japan and bought a WRX about 5 years ago so things may have changed a littlebut this is work you will have to do.

You will need to get the car SVA tested at an apropriate testing center cost aroun £150

to pass the test you will have to add a fog light. aprrox £30-40 ( bizarly switch is usualy there but check first)
you will have to have a speedo reading in MPH you can buy a gear box for around £40 and just put an MPH sticker on or buy new dials
you have to change the diameter of the petrol filling neck so it wont let you put in a diesel nozzle(think thats the reason ( I had a washer welded in place)

Edited to add dont forget to factor in an alarm and imoberiser if you want one because car theft is/was almost unheard of in Japan the car almost definately wont have one.

Hi StuCha

Going to the auction this monday to have a look at an evo5 they've got going through, should go for about 10k if it's going to be cheap, alot of the Jap import guys in the south use this auction for there stock apparently so should'nt be to shabby. I have a well tuned/sorted RX7 for sale at the moment if your interested:

didn't end up going Stu, even tho they had a nice evo 5 up for grabs, might be worth phoning to see what it fetched, anyways I didn't go as I found what I wanted down at Torque imports in devon, really nice guys and not alot more money than importing yerself and with no problems. Are you still thinking of auction, the one I bought actually came through that very auction 3 weeks ago.

Good Luck
