What is a twin entry turbo (in the context of a turbo mr2)? I've seen them mentioned in ads and wondered what it means.

Thanks,

Mark

As far as i know, the twin entry is NOT a twin turbo, as some peeps assume... It is a single turbo, and all it is is 2 entries rather than one, as apparently 1 can be a bit of a bottleneck! If you could imagine all the boost going to all 4 cylinders from the one port, it can be a bottle neck, so they plonk in another port, and hey presto... better flowing air... I think... I may be orribly wrong!

NONONON! Twin entry turbo is actually superior to a normal turbo.
It has indeed got a twin entry volute, but there is no restriction.
If its the CT26 as on Toyotas, its got a very good turbo indeed, its also got the least restrictive of any of the integral wastegates.
Twin entry=good.
Sorry i cant give a better answer, but im a bit drunkt at the minute...maybe later.

I thought that the CT26 was the standard turbo though. I'd assumed, as it was mentioned in the ads, that a twin-entry turbo was something non-standard. Is that not the case?

Thanks,

Mark

Never said it was worse... In fact I think you'll find I said the single entry was worse, cos it is more restrictive flow wise. The toyota turbo is CT-26 garrett pre 94, and CT-20b 94 onwards. Seems to do the trick for me. can boost 18 on stock internals, and can get over 300 horsies with it. Not bad for a little 2 litre! And all the turbos on MR2's were twin-entry as standard, as far as i know.

Thanks for the information.

They do seem to be astonishingly good value for money.
Any top purchase tips/better years than others?

Thanks,

Mark

Erm... depends what you want... Rev 1 models, (pre 93), were a bit more biased with weight on the back, so are a bit more involving, and fun to drive, but came with a less powerful 220 bhp engine. They came with bilstien suspension all round though, and 14 inch walloys. The rev 2's, which were 93 I believe had an improved suspension setup, and the engine was rotated forward slightly giving a more balanced weight distribution, but some purist types prefer the older setup. They also upped the wheels to 15 inch. Then cam the rev 3's onwards... they came with the 245 bhp engines, and are the prefered choice for many. Most changes after that were purely superficial... spoilers, etc.
The engines used in the turbo's are also used in the celica GT-4's, which i'm sure you know are bullet proof, and parts are pretty easy to get as long as you know where to look, and there are plenty of places to buy performance bits from. fensport being the main one people rave about.... erm... Other than that... go sign up to www.imoc.co.uk and there is shedloads of info in there... they will seperate the facts from lies spread by nasty journalists! The only thing that puts people off is the tales of awful handling, and ending up in hedges! well... i can tell you that is testicles... Like any high power car, DON'T BOOT IT IN THE WET... some peeps seem to think that cos it is a 2 seater turbo thingy, they can drive in wet, like in dry!
If ya want any more info... feel free to e-mail me

Thanks for the detailed info. Hope you don't mind a few more questions...

I've seen this ad...
www.imoc.co.uk/sale/display.asp?SaleID=2916
...given that it's a k-reg is this a rev 2?

Is the LSD standard or an option?

I like the look of the aftermarket alloys on the above car but do the wider tyres adversely affect the handling?

On the handling front, when the back does slide is it catchable (I've had a few lively rwd cars such as my tvr s3 and an s13 200sx turbo so am used to rwd but have never had a mid-engined car)?

Thanks once again.

Regards,

Mark

Ello again... It looks mint, and black is such a classy colour, especially with lovely black wheels. The tyres should idealy be 20 mm smaller width at the front from the rear, so I presume he has 205 on the front. It is a rev 2, and you can find out a bit more by going to this site here.. http://users.breathemail.net/mensah/my95turbo.html
... that has a good wadge of info about all the revs, and any other info you might need.
As for wether it is catchable.. I am a pretty fastish chap, and althought I have had some scary sideways type stuff I've always managed to get it back without a real problem (touch wood/head). it's all down to driver skill i suppose... I'm no Damon Hill, but I ain't a freakin idiot either, and it does take some getting used to... saying that, I had an NA for a year before the turbo, which helped smooth the transition. LSD was standard on tubbies from a certain year, but buggered if I can remember when! I'll get back to you on that one. Well... All I can say now is that if you do get one, you must be prepared for the hairdressers comments, and that crap, but with 245 + under the engine cover...who gives a flying f*@k!!!
have fun

Happy to help!
Andy

Ok...wee little update... The LSD was an option on rev 2's, but fear not... you can get an LSD equipped gearbox from www.fensport.co.uk for 300 of your English pounds. these chaps are the daddies when it comes to providing parts!!

I'll see if I can get along to one of the meets although won't be able to make it to castle combe. I'm spending all my time getting my tvr ready for sale at the moment but after next weekend I'll be able to devote more time to looking for a car.

Thanks again for the information.

Thank you very much for the offer Umar, it's very kind of you. I'll finish off the tvr first and find out how much money I have to play with and give you a shout.

A friend (who has a tt300zx) has suggested I may get a newer car for the same money (about 6k ish) if I direct import a condition 4 car from Japan. Has anyone had any experience of this process? I've had an import prelude before so am not worried by the concept of imports but have never gone 'direct' before.

Thanks,

Mark

I imported mine... In fact ALL mr2 turbos are imported, as they were never officially released over in the UK. If I were you, I'd take up Umar's offer, as I'm sure you won't be dissappointed! Plus... there is a Murkylager going..purrrrrr!
I got my baby from www.mr2-direct-imports.co.uk run by a chap called Julian. he can get you one as close to your spec as possible.

What I meant was directly imported as in getting an agent to find you a condition 4 car in black (for example) and ship it over rather than buy one already imported to the uk by a dealer and pay the extra markup.

Mark

Erm... yeah...I did... I chose the one I wanted, and had to wait 2 months for it to arrive and go through sva etc! Thats how he does his business... he sources cars for you, with a spec you give him, and he will go out.. find em.. send piccies etc... and you pick, and he does the rest... You just give him a bundle of notes for his trouble.

Oh... and I finally got the freakin picture thing working on profile... so you can have a peek now too!

Oh, gotcha, sorry, I misunderstood. I'm not the most patient of people when it comes to waiting Did you get a better car for your money by doing it that way?

Doesn't seem to be working at the moment
