New job so new car required, it means must be semi sensible, semi respectable, look relatively expensive.

I want inspiration before I go and buy a BMW 330.

Minimum 2+2.

Doing 20,000 a year.

Max £8,000

I'm considering :

RWD Skyline
Supra
200SX
300ZX

I'm thinking that Impreza's and other 4wd generally aren't as much fun and are less economical.

I prefer big engines to turbos so I was thinking the 300ZX (maybe without turbo) would be good.

Your thoughts ?

They give me 30p / mile.

A very quick calc works out that a car doing 20mpg will cost me £1500 a year more than one doing 30mpg.

I can cope with that... but will these cars do 20 ?

I drive pretty hard, I get around 25 out of my 'lude VTEC and 328.

I thought about an Accord type R but I don't like waiting for revs all the time and its front WD which isn't good.

Realistically how does a Supra / 300ZX NON turbo compare to a 330 ?

I'm guessing they are heavier less economical and not as good handling as the newer BMW... but every bugger has a BM.

The non-turbos are just image pretty much. Not a great deal of go, but lok god. If you want a seat of your pants drive, then you HAVE to go turbo. I'd take the rwd skyline, 200sx, and the supra above the 300 though. Either of the 3 will give you the buzz you are looking for. Each has their plus points, so go frive them, and see which you like. The supra loks bigger then it feels, never driven a rwd skyline, and a 200sx is very much underated in my book.

Yes I don't mind going turbo its just I hate lag...

Very unimpressed by my old S13 yet my scooby had hardly any.

I know everyone says go drive them, but thats easier said than done... particularly fast enough to get a good impression.

So the 3ltr's presumably have around 200bhp are no match for the europeans ?

The 3 ltr turbos? More like 300+. The NA's are around 200 I belive. Lag is dependent on the car, and some have it, others don't. The supras I've driven are pretty lag free, as was the 200, (although that was tuned a bit). The 300 is quite smooth, and if there is lag, I never noticed it. Either way, I didn't think one was any worse than the other, so it's down to other factors..Interior, response, handling, comfort, etc. You are lucky in that all the cars on your list have nice interiors. Not in the TVR mould, and mainly black, or dark grey, but the cockpits are nice, and enclosing, and feel like a great place to be.

I find my Supra is considerably more responsive than my brothers BMW 328i for reference.

How dare you? Everyone knows NA is pure, and lovely, and all natural.. Not unethical like those cheating turbo thingies! hehe

Keep up lads !

Andy we were talking about NA's !

Gaz you were the one who said the NA's were cr@p and you'd rather have the 330 now your saying an NA supra would be faster.... I'm getting confused.

Gaz that was one of my points... or questions... the larger the engine the less the lag... the more I like it.

Point is, as you mentioned a TT supra is very thirsty and I have rarely felt that my 328 is underpowered... in fact it's hard staying below 100, so more temptation is the last thing I need.

I must admit watching some of the excellent drifting vids on 'you tube' is currupting too !

Sorry dude, but 'most' people get an NA version, then wish they had bought the turbo version 6 months later,! By all means get a non-turbo, but on your head be it!

3.0 non turbo, or 3.0 turbo??? You decide hehe

I'll go and try a few...

But I like driving hard...

and a hard driven 3ltr turbo soon ends up the wrong side of 130mph.

i know its cheesy to suggest your own car, but i was in exactly the same position as you about 5 months ago (except i get 42p per mile woohoo!) and ended up with one of these for a lot less...

mainly because the insurance was much cheaper (group 13 for mine) than the equivalent Jap / German car.

My next car will most likely be an RX7, MR2 Turbo or Porsche 944T...so make of that what you will

Skyline yes

You could get a very tasty R32 GTST for £5k, or an R33 for a bit more, but I'm not a huge fan of the R33 styling tbh.

Sounds like the 2.0ltr R32 might not be grunty enough, go for the albeit, weightier 2.5 R33 & disable the hicas. Biased? moi?

Yes I have been told that an R32 is more fun than an R33...

But I figured the 2.5 would have less lag than the 2.0...

I have found 3 R32's for £2500 but they are all miles away (like 200 or so)

and I don't want to travel that far to find out they're dogs.

EVO reckoned the 300ZX was the best Nissan behind a GTR yet they're very cheap...

Anyone know where to find any reviews on the various jap cars ?

Might be sacrilege, and probably out of your budget, but what about a diesel Bimmer and a re-chip?

Top-line cost will be more but you'll recover it in fuel-economy, and unless you're doing a fair amount of nice A- and B-roads the lack of revs won't be noticeable.

DIE-sel...

No way.

From what I read the E46 is less fun than the E36 I already find boring...

So to then kill it with a DIEsel... I don't think so.

One thought.

20k p.a. on a sports car can only result in major depreciation, possible resale trouble, and/or bills to repair stuff that wears out (clutches, dampers, bushes...). The faster (and heavier) the car, the quicker stuff is likely to wear out.

But can understand wanting something 'fun' - I went for a diesel Focus and a weekend toy as I knew I couldn't afford to run a sports car doing 25k p.a., and to be honest the Focus has been better than expected...especially in this weather where I don't fully trust the S, but can dance just on the edge of adhesion in the Focus.
