*Bleeping* reverse gear (MR2)
Discussion
Apologies if this has been asked before - I tried a search, but nothing showed up...
Does anyone know of a simple (reversible!) method of disabling that bleeping in reverse on a MkIII MR2? It's really getting on my t*ts. I almost wouldn't mind if it was audible outside the car, but I find it just so patronising that they think I need to be warned about the difference between 1st and reverse.
Also, is there any way of upgrading the CD player (one that plays MP3 discs would be nice), whilst retaining any SatNav connections that may be needed?

didn't realise the eunos had it aswell, there must be loads of people being driven mad by the 'beep beep beep beep'
Yup... it's hardly like I need reminding I'm going backwards, or that the beeper is loud enough to tell other people that I'm reversing..
useless damn thing... it beeps when I've not got my seatbelt on as well, I KNOW I HAVEN'T GOT MY SEATBELT ON!
Gah!
It's nice to know that other people hate it too. I asked at the dealer whether it could be turned off, and she said "No, sorry, not allowed to - it's because reverse is next to first, but lots of people ask that question". To which I might ask "I've seen loads of cars with reverse next to first (my son's Astra, for example) and they don't drive you barmy. Why should I have to put up with it?" As I said before, it's not so much the beeping (although that's pretty irritating), it's the assumption that I'm too stupid to know the difference between the two gears, or that I'm sufficiently brain-dead to accidentally stick it in reverse and career backwards into the car behind me. Aargh! Assumption-of-stupidity-nanny--state rant, mumble, froth...

Sounds like its been put in for the American market....
Haven't had one for reverse in any of my cars, but the *ding-ding-ding* at anything over 115km/h in my first Subaru turned out to be easy enough to track down and remove. The Legacy also makes noises at you whenever you have the drivers door open while they keys are still in the ignition. Bit annoying if you're working on the car, but I guess it makes it harder to lock your keys in the car (or would if you didn't use the button on the key to lock the car anyway )
don't know the answer but have met some knowlegable peeps from here:

Apparently it involves cutting a wire. Not sure I want to go that far, yet. Maybe when I've got to the screaming stage...
Success!
For those who are interested, destructions follow (caveat: these are for my car - a Sep '05 registered MkIII. YMMV)
Pop off the instrument cluster housing (grab it by the two outer recesses and pull) and undo the three screws holding the instrument cluster. There are two connectors going into the top of the cluster at the back - a blue one and a white one: you want the white one. This connector has two red and blue wires - the offending one is the one on the top row. Check with a multimeter - with the ignition on, and the gear stick in reverse, the correct wire will show 12V. Snip it. I've put a bullet connector on the ends, so that I can reconnect it before its next service.
No more beeping. Result!
