Hi guys and girls - fairly long post so apologies straight away!

Bought MK1 1.8 RS Ltd back in June - lovely motor, recaros etc! anyway six weeks into ownership original clutch goes - fair nuff. Was told was thrust bearing so had that an clutch replaced with a Blueprint clutch (?). All well for four weeks but then starts makin exactly the same noise again Took it back to garage (indpendent chap) who said he had never had a faulty blueprint clutch before and the problem could be in the gearbox!!

Now I’m not sure about this but am getting the feelin I might have been ripped off here. Is it likely that he has just replaced the thrust bearing an charged for whole clutch hence bearing knackerin so quickly or is it likely to be a faulty replacement clutch? When it was first replaced the clutch felt very much lighter and also the biting point was really low. Car ran fine for a few weeks (every day driver but not that much mileage and NO I don’t slip the clutch all the time No p*ss takin bout women drivers please!! I used to drive for a living) then started to make the same noises again albeit quietly but has got worse very quickly.

Hands up to not knowin anything bout clutches/gearbox so is there any likelihood that there is something wrong with gearbox that would make clutch go so quickly?

Hopin someone can give me some advice cos this is starting to ruin my enjoyment of a superb car (pic to follow when i can figure out resizing!)

Lovely car the RS... LOVE those recaros!

sadly I can't help much with the clutch problem, other than suggesting getting the car to one of the reputable MX5 specialists...

oh, and ask your question over on www.mx5ocforum.co.uk , it's a good place to go!

Going to have to give this guy the benefit of the doubt for now re: clutch just wondered if there was any likelihood I'm gonna get stiffed for a new gearbox

I had a similar problem after a track day in my car. Changed the clutch, which was better for a few weeks, but still problems. Then did the slave and master cylinders - and it was fine after that. Without knowing what the noise is your talking about, its a little difficult to nail down - but if you are not sure of the mechanic, then I would get a 2nd opinion from an MX5 specialist - Look at the MX5OC site as Pierscoe says, you should get an idea of a local specialist on their forum.

If all else fails, give me a shout if you are looking to sell. I am toying with the idea of buying an 'RS' sometime this winter...

Noise happens when clutch depressed - when it happened first time took it to Mazda main dealer and they said it was thrust bearing as did several other people I consulted. Will have a chat with the guy about the cylinders tho - may be worth a shot.

And sorry mate - will NOT be sellin any time soon SOOOOO in luuurve with this car

Aftermarket clutches tend to go with or without issue on these cars, I've heard of buzzing/grinding/banging clutches, and then I've heard of problem free installs.

I don't think these cars are very fond of aftermarket replacements, I should know - I'm running a Spec 2 Performance Clutch, it made alot of noise at first during run-in (500 miles) and then it was fine, further abuse with the assitance of a turbo, helped after run in??!!

The above poster has already mentioned checking the master and slave cylinders, but you could ask an MX5 specialist to have a look.

Performance 5, Autolink UK, Tracktec, and MX5 Mad (three of these guys are performance specialists but they know their stuff and are quite happy to give out advice)

The only other thing is that the clutch should be adjusted on fitting, another theory is that if it isn't then that could noise?? Just a theory....hope you get it sorted....glad you llluurrvvvee the car.

Pop over to www.mx5nutz.com come in, ask the question, have a chat and have some fun.
