I'm thinking of buying a 2002 - 2004 Impreza,

Can anyone give me a quick guide as to the differences in the WRX / Sti models and the PPP additions, I'm confused!

Cheers

Not a complete expert but I will have a go:

WRX is standard model with approx 221bhp ie it is the standard UK car.

WRX PPP as above but with engine upgrade to approx 260bhp

Sti is full on rally slag version not sure on power figure but I would guess 276bhp

What makes it even more confusing is you can get an STi PPP but I have no idea what this means.

Most people I have talked to would recommend (for British roads) the WRX with PPP as you get almost the same power as the STi but you won't be shaken to death by the overly stiff suspension set up...I am sure someone with more knowledge will come along and elaborate.

AFAIK 308 bhp and poss lower ride/stiffer set up. A guy at work has one and routinely gets 16mpg, he keeps grumbling about it but still keeps it

nice one guys,

That makes things a bit clearer! I had an early Type RA several years ago, and absolutley loved it. Got up one morning to find some b#####d had pinched it. To make matters worse 2 weeks later I was driving my fiance's brand new renault. I was waiting patiently at some lights when an uninsured driver ran into the back of me and pretty much finished that car off too. My insurance was next to useless at paying up, and the whole fiasco left me so dejected I went off and bought a new Mondeo! Anyway a man needs his toys, so it's time for another Scoob.

Out of interest, what makes the P1 so special?

Type RAs are still excellent cars, being the lightest Imprezas by a decent margin and ~280 bhp. If the RA suited you then I'd probably go for a STi (with DCCD - driver controlled centre diff), or if you can find one an STi spec C - kinda a newer equivalent to the RA, lighter, quicker, etc than the regular STi.

P stands for Prodrive and it was the only fully type/Subaru approved version of the STi, it was set up for British roads and came with full Subaru back up/warranty. Many consider it the best original shape Subaru, although it was much more expensive than the STi.
