Hi Sorry to jump into your forum.

I was wondering wether the Gear change on the Manual Impreza is cable operated or whether the shift goes direct to the transmission case?

A mate and I are considering silly projects and wondered wether the gear shift coud be moved toward the engine block and front axle.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it could be but the driver may need to have pretty short legs. Always like silly projects, what are you trying to do?

Sit the top end of this picture, down to the back of the transmission, in another car.

The engine is well forward of the front axle meaning that you would have Engine weight fairly close to 40/60. and twin turbo flat four easily tuned lots of available mods etc. Without the rear propshaft in place and blanked off traction control should deliver all power to the front axles.

Whilst the Gear casing is long, a bit of "photoshop" measuring suggest it would fit in the rear Overhang ok. I jsut needed to know if the back seat passenger would be doign the gear shift for you or if there was some possibility of a remote shift. Other wise it might be a case of using an automatic box.

Just a word of advice. A couple people have successfully completed twin turbo EJ207's and they don't make near the amount of power/torque that they were expecting.

I see what you're upto now. It is a tempting plan at first sight but there are some problems with it. The original box idea is a little hard to work as just locking the rear prop to send all the power to the front can overload things. The engine remains very high for a mid engine application so roll oversteer is a problem. Have a search for Saker. They have done something similar but use a different transmission to make a fantastic endurance racer but it is mainlt from bespoke kit.

Sorry, not tryin to pee on your bonfire but it may be slightly harder than at first appears. You may get some joy trying your ideas in the Kit Car forum, they are a good problem solving type of bunch. There is also a thread in their about the Murtaya which is a front engine car using Scoob running gear as was the Delfino which never seemed to get of the ground.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I'm already doing a similar "silly project"

The gear shift is via rods to the rear of the box, so it's possible to move it forwards with a bit of fabrication work.

IMHO twin turbo is a waste of time however you configure them. Single turbo EJ20x engines are easily tunable to decent power...

What is your silly project going into?

And having only measured with photoshop what is length of the transmission overhang?

No photos at the moment. It's a big pile of metalwork waiting for my garage extension to be completed
