Found this : www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Specialist-cars/Competition-cars/auction-66498341.htm

Which looks quite interesting, has a few good bits, and claimed;

890hp (flywheel) @ 8100 rpm on 21psi

Can be taken to 8500rpm so much more horsepower available with more boost.

Car weighs 995kg with full front and rear windscreens.

So is there any chance its making anywhere remotely near the claimed power?

It says its running a "mitsubishi TD08 turbo" , what do they flow? I wouldn't expect any Mitsubishi turbo to be capable of that?

I'm rather suspicious as it seems ridiculously cheap for something running big power (would be cheap for half the power!), not a typo though as 890hp is claimed more than once.

I suspect a load of schist but am willing to be proven wrong...

I may be wrong but I was planning on a TD08 for the Rex and I believe they are a sort of hybrid of the T78 and T88 so plenty big enough for the level of flow required. I'd be more curious of the 955kg with glass screens? How much work has Mr Norris done to bring the bogie in under 1000kg?

Hmm maybe it could have that sort of power then...

The price still looks wrong for it though, they're asking NZ$26500 which is less than 9000 pounds, surely it can't be possible to build a 900hp Evo motor for as little as that? At least without it exploding quite rapidly?

Bargain rocketship if its as good as it claims though I guess.

Not really.
Most of turbo kits are just a con. This include HKS, Greddy ....... etc.
A lot of turbos are actually made by Mitshubishi. All HKS and all those fancy big companies do are changing the the front housings, then call them their turbos.

I bet it lags like a motherer.

There doesnt seem to be a huge amount of work listed to give nearly 900bhp....or am I missing something?

yep the TD08 is very laggy as it is an old turbo, huge, ugly and very laggy. Ther is a pic of one on the MRC website. I don't see any reason why it couldn't put out that sort of power it has an increased capacity (2.4l) ridiculous levels of fueling, the right rods and pistons etc etc, not sure how long it will continue to produce 900bhp befor she pops though!

It's a Lancer Evolution 1 (Proton Persona use the old Lancer CC bodyshape after they bought the old tooling and licence from Mitsubishi so they will look virtually identical). They weigh around 1240kgs in GSR trim (i.e. with all the luxuries you get in a normal car) so you could get it down to 995kg if you stripped everything unnecessary (they have even dumped the rear spoiler so I guess they have) however that would also be why it doesn't meet roadworthiness, either that or perhaps because it is an ex-rallycar or maybe even the rollcage (I know full rollcages are illegal on streetcars in Aus.). The engine does sound reasonably worked over, plus it's running methanol, larger capacity and a massive turbo almost certainly pushing loads of boost through it. 890bhp is not unknown for 4G63Ts either, there are a few kicking around in that spec these days.

There is this similar one in NZ pushing 1000bhp, unsuprisingly the engine later exploded.
