Its a year 2000 2.5 Subaru legacy outback, automatic model, had it a week, yesterday just returning home and power steering went heavy and battery not charging, turned out both belts had come off and were sitting in bottom of engine compartment, neither belt was damaged or starting to split.
This morning replaced both belts and tensioned them, to my horror the engine was running with a horrible clattering noise like the big ends have gone! looked under bonnet with engine running and crank shaft pulley is not running true, wobbling all over the place!

So getting to the point of my posting, is the crankshaft pulley rubber mounted or solid, would have imagined bolted solidly? in which case it looks to me like the crankshaft is broken, or maybe the pulley bolts are not tightened up at all, it supposed to have had cam belt replaced 5k miles ago, maybe the cock who replaced it forgot to torque the bolts up?

Please has anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like front crank pulley bolt has come loose. if bolt had been left loose, i feel that it would have come loose long time before 5000 miles. i reckonmend removal of the pulley, checking for damage to crankshaft keyway and pulley keyway. re talk crankshaft pulley bolt to 172nm-182nm.

Regards rubbermounting. outer part of pulley is rubbermounted to inner section of pulley to reduce shock but these rairly part.

If you need any bolts or pulleys i have a couple of good condition second hand ones if its any help.

Hope this can be of use to you. Hope you ghet bk on the road soon budy.
