Since posting the Legnum/Supra/GT-R thread the situation has slightly changed. I did not know of the arcane and outdated provisions in the UK, one has to face when getting a dog to move with you. In short, it might have to spend several months in quarantine. This will significantly eat into the initially planned budget for the car, as well as provide an added impetus for getting one (since most kennels do not have convenient transportation options otherwise).

So not a daily driver, still but something to visit the dog regularly (several times a week), two seats suffice as such (it's a foxterrier and likes to ride in the passenger footwell), should be reasonably priced to operate and fun to drive. And most probably Japanese

You'd get a Legnum VR4 for as little as £3500 if you look in the right places. Otherwise you could have a look at: Honda Prelude 2.2 VTi, Honda Civic 1.6/1.8 VTi, Mazda MX-5, Old Supra 3.0 Non Turbo....

That's all I can think of for now, i'm sure lots more ideas will be posted below though.

Or there are loads of 200sx;s about for the money.

I think on the basis that you will effectively have 0 ncb (with just moving back to UK) on any jap turbo nutter machine, insurance is going to be your biggest hurdle

True. I am 27, have no accident history, no speeding tickets the UK police can know about etc. Does that translate to totally unacceptable, still?

Do things like a garage with CCTV help? I could in that case look for a flat that has one.

The only way to be sure is to ring a few companies and test the water.

I was insuring the MRT when I was 22 with 1 years NCB, but i was getting my pants pulled down for it!

My MR2T was superb.

We have quarantine for dogs and other (mammalian) pets to stop rabies taking hold in this country.

You can do it online if you know some basic details. All the info doesn't need to be strictly accurate as your not taking the policy, just dipping your toe so to speak.

The rabies protection is the official excuse. First of all there is rabies in the UK and the quarantine will not eliminate that. Second of all I do support preventive measures. My dog has been vaccinated several times already and I support the blood test too. But I have yet to find a vet, who will explain why the passed blood test needs to be 6 months old. If the dog has sufficient rabies protection now, it is going to be the same in 6 months (booster shots are given annually but are effecive for 3 years). The schemes are purely a remnant of the past that the British bureaucracy has trouble giving up.

£4k Jap fun car? Erm, pretty much everything pre-'00!

SX
MR2 (turbo or N/A)
Prelude
Civic VTi
MX5

Depends on requirements for space and hard-top or not. All of the above have a good rep. But all will have a lot of dogs and badly-modded ones amongst the good cars, so look carefully.

Rabies is in this country, but it isn't as prolific as on the continent. Some bats have it, and I'm sure the odd rat does too, but our pet population is 99.9% clear. Iirc we don't even have rabies innoculations here. I'll get my dog's med certificate and tell you what he's innoculated against....

I agree that there are fewer rabies cases in the UK and am fully in favour of preventive measures. My dog will not bring rabies to the UK, as the blood test has proven. Why this cannot be enough but the blood test has to be 6 months old beats any vet. The longest quarantine in other EU countries is 4 weeks, which I would understand, or 3 or 4 months in Sweden, where one can quarantine the pet at home, though - again acceptable. The UK system seems to simply be a remnant of the old times, not removed because the various kennels and catteries, who provide the quarantine service stand to lose money from change and seem to be strong politically.

And had the dog been younger than 3 months no restrictions would apply either, which totally enrages me, since such a dog has had little to no time to have developed any sort of immunity!

6 months is too long (I thought they shortened it?). Blood test shows your dog is clean, but it doesn't show if your dog has infected mites/lice hitching a ride. On the upside, you can bring your dog into this country- if work relocate me to Germany I'd have to give up my dog as he's a banned breed in Germany.

I know this is totally out of the blue but since you are one of the very few dog owners I know in the UK and seem to be very well informed, too...

I know exceptions have been made for people and that there is a possibility in getting a dog in without the quarantine even if the test is not 6 months old. If you have any information or access to it, on how this can be performed, I'd be eternally grateful. As I said (not sure it was this forum), I would do anything short of selling my soul to the devil, to get around the quarantene
