My key wont go all the way in to the lock, wouldn't normally be too worried about getting in to the boot, but my Laptop is in there, so how can I get in please.

Can you email me on mick_barrett34@hotmail.com please.

Open the armrest compartment between the two seats and pull the boot lever next to the petrol lid lever.

This may well work on the later cars, but it's certainly no good on WG's, I've already checked

Gaz, no luck so far, going to slide hammer the lock if there are no other work arounds.

Standard feature on Mk1s!! Weird! I would take the centre console off (unscrew gear knob, then a couple of screw where it meets the dash, one in the ashtray, and a couple in the centre cubby, it's a 2 minute job) to see if the pull wire for the boot release is hiding....

Actually scratch that, I just remembered WG's is one of the old press cars, so didn't have all the full production bells and whistles....

Short of taking it to a locksmith I can think of no other options. Sorry!!

Cheers Benj, just checked anyway and can see no wires or cables. There is an unused hole in the body just below the petrol cap release which I opresume could have been for the boot release.

The remote in the centre glove box by the fuel release is NOT standard on MK1's. Well, its not fitted on mine anyway. I know doesn't help you now, but you can by kits to retro fit this ( try mx5parts.co.uk ).
When a freind of mine could not get into his, he removed the number plate and drilled a large hole so he could get to the catch. He welded it up after, but if it was me, I would leave it "easy" to get into in case I needed to again in the future ( with the plate back, no one can see so they won't know ). Come to think of it, it may be worth doing that BEFORE I lock the keys in...... Then again, it may be easier to slide hammer the lock as you suggest.

No easy way in, thanks for all your replies. We're ordering the retro fit cable release, in the mean time i used the old fashioned "large hammer and screwdriver" method

Just looked over some old e mails as it was bugging me ..... Boot release was 1991 onwards.... Glad we got that cleared up!

BFH/screwdriver combo rocks.
