Just asked this question of a Clio 1.8 16v over on the french bread forum, thought i'd ask here too:

Anyone know the kerb weight of the old MX-5 1.6i? Parkers say 1035kgs for the later 1.6i, is this right?

Also, how much weight do you reckon you could strip out of it for track/road use keeping the hood?

I'm totting up the sums for a road legal track car, I'm looking at an MX-5, 205 1.9 GTi or Clio 16v. I'm looking mainly at bang for buck out of a basic semi reliable N/A car.

But the answers simple, only one of them is rear wheel drive, anything else is pointless

I'd agree it I were talking big power, but even when i'm finished either car will be sub 150hp. I would like an MX-5, but it'll come down to costs when all is said and done, the french stuff is easier to find for sub £1500.

I took my 1.8 Eunos to the local weigh bridge and it came out at 960Kg, 500Kg front axle 460Kg rear axle. This was with a full tank of petrol, full oil, full screen wash, tools I carry etc, but not with me in it.

Spec of my car is :-

1.8
NO ABS
NO Air Con
NO spare wheel
NO tie downs
Does have Powersteering
Cloth Seats
Vinyl Hood & rear screen
OZ Ultraleggera 15" wheels
Torsen LSD

That's exactly the figure I have for a recent 1.6 (1999).

p.s. If it was to be a track toy & bit of road/ weekend fun use I think it'd easily fall to ~910Kg keeping the roof.

Loose electric windows
Exhaust heat shielding
Electric aerial & stereo & speakers etc
replace seats with cheapo buckets
Sound deadening & carpets
Replace all the silly iron girder mounts for things (like the horn) with bits of aluminium sheet.
Loose mud guards and rear wing.
Simplify induction pipework (theres loads of it).

Hum... can't think of much left to loose.

That's the Mk2 the Mk1 is lighter. IIRC the early Mk1 1.6s are 975KG. (this fluctuated throughout the years due to bracing.)
