Just bought an Impreza WRX
Discussion
Well I finally got one, after looking the through the PH Classifieds the only one I found I liked got sold I managed to find one in the back of JTuner, at an Importers in Bradford.
1995 M reg, WRX, totally standard except the Blitz Nur Spec exhaust and the STI front spoiler. Had a go in it, drove perfect, no knocking, no banging, no rattles from the the engine or gearbox. Its been really well looked after by the japanese owner, only done 70k miles (112k kms) and had the cam belt done at 100k kms.
I pick it up on the 2nd August and can't wait!
Heres what it looks like..
Anything to look out for on this year car?

Gonna get some replacement pads and discs as spares for a later date.
You may want to hang fire a bit on those. Early Impreza brakes are infamous rather than famous. You may want to hang on and see how you get on with the stock ones and whether you want to upgrade before you commit.
Looks like a good purchase. Have fun.

I meant standard ones, just to have them on the shelf in the garage etc. Not upgrading anything yet.

I'm am I the only thinking its an STi and not just a normal WRX. Its got the bigger rear spoiler, pink badge, and windstrips.
Has it got a red inlet manifold?

No don't think so (was 2 weeks ago I went to see it, I've slept since then lol). I think its a WRX with the STI parts on. I'm thinking of taking the STI stickers off but I kinda like em.
Another way of checking if its a WRX or STi is the rev-counter, iirc most of the STi's redline at 8000 whereas the WRX's redline at 7500. (or it could have been 7500 and 7000, anybody remember?)
and if it has an extra little dial beside the handbrake its an STi-RA, which is the really fun one

I know its definately not an RA, as fun as they are I couldn't justify the extra insurance an even higher feul bills. I know this one will be a swine on feul but the RA's are just rediculous.
Theres loads of RA's for sale as well, gotta be a major issue if people are getting rid.

Insurance and fuel bills probably, the 'normal' RAs have what is basically just the group N close-ratio box in them, which means revving at 4000+ at open-road cruising speeds. The V-ltd versions have a longer 5th gear to make them more useable but the same first 4 ratios which still give reasonably mental acceleration.
From a bit of browsing on scoobynet I get the impression that quite a few people buy the R and RA's without realising how differently they drive to regular scoobs - theres a distinct lack of understeer (64R/36F torque split), and people buy them expecting a car that practically drives itself, or they come from hot-hatches then realise it drives more like a RWD, can't handle it, get scared and sell them.
Could be wrong but its the impression I get.

Older STis have a 7500 redline and UK & WRX is 7k.
Thanks for clearing that up. My '90 Legacy VZ actually also had a 7500 redline (7750 limiter) but its 150 n/a bhp wasn't quite the same . Didnt really have much under 4500 either, really had to rev it to get it going well. But it sounded fairly good
Thanks for that info GravelBen, in all honesty I am upgrading from a MGZR 1.4 to the Impreza so you could say I am one of the people you were referring to. lol
TBH I've grown out of the modding scene, yes I might fiddle a bit later on but with it been 11 years old and in the condition its in I want to keep it like it is. I'll be happy with the power jump and I really want to get to know the car before I put my footdown in it.
