I've just found out that the gatso's being tested at Bruntingthorpe at Vmax had noise detection equipment in them, and were fairly accurate.

You just know that there is going to be a big clampdown on noisy cars & bikes coming soon. Doesn't look good for anyone who's just forked out for a Blitz Nur Spec of similar....

Fibbs is fcuked then

I can't see how this can be regulated on the road - there is no requirement in SVA, MoT or highway code for the noise to be below a given level on the road. I know bike exhausts need to be kite marked so there's likely some regulation but not seen anything for car exhausts...

Also, how will they isolate your car from all the background noise of other cars? Can't see it working TBH.

A chap down the road from me has some big rough sounding Yank bike thing that he likes to get dressed up in his all black YMCA leather romper suit with tassles on at 8am on Sunday and ride past my house every weekend without fail.

If it puts a stop to people like him, I'll be happy.

Plus, if your worried about it, just dip your clutch and coast past the camera, its not like any of us are going to be W.O.T. past speed cameras anyway is it??

I don't know, if you can keep a WOT and pass them faster than 165 (I believe - not that I'm in any way condoning that sort of behaviour officer ) then you don't trigger them, I'm guessing, they would be triggered too late by the sound and photograph an empty space!

I so beleive the SVA test is 101db at 2/3rds the maximum power rpm of the engine.

How are they going to know what rpm your engine is at?

Clever electronics! Going to be really confused by a rotary I suspect.

I sincerely hope that this isnt true.

I've just ordered a Spoon N1 for my S2000 and this pumps out a 112Db howl at 9000rpm!

Not that I reckon anyone will have a chance of topping 172 mph without employing WOT

I'd love to see em sort that one out.

They'll be a sudden increase in RXs now.

M.A.D. will be on the case pretty soon though. Find many chopped down and in hedges/quarries etc etc

hang on a min..... The SVA specifies a certain dB limit, but the MOT doesn't, my understanding is that it is down to the testers discretion? As it isn't a requirement for every car to have an SVA how will they be able to operate this? Also, surely the rules are that a car must be road legal (i.e. in a state where it is MOT-able) not SVA-able. Unless they are planning on bringing legislation regarding noise levels for the MOT I can't see this being enforceable. For example, my Turbo II is a UK car therefore no SVA it has a UK legal exhaust with one silencer (no centre silencers) and is VERY loud, esp with the bridge ported engine! However it passes MOTs and there are no grounds that I can see for any sort of prosecution. I may get pulled over, but as long as I can prove the car is MOT'd and would pass an MOT. If they are planning on legislating specific noise levels into the MOT, surely they would only affect cars built after a certain date?

Yup, like the changes to emissions - not done retrospectively.

There's a thread over on MRC at the mo where people are recounting experiences with plod giving them a hard time over aftermarket exhausts. Basically some plod don't know a thing and the more they get into detail the worse it gets and the less logic applies.

Some guys have had plod crawling under their cars to find the 'kite mark' that indicated it's approved for UK use. Obviously, as the cars are mostly Jap imports, they don't have them. Plod then say they're illegal. In reality my car was passed as being legal for UK raods as part of the import process (SVA) and therefore the exhaust is legal by inference.

Bottom line though as posted above - how many drive through scameras on full boost? Only muppets.
