Looks like the front nearside brake line decided to quit. Total brake failure.

Could have been worse. I could have hit something.

TOTAL brake failure?

I thought all cars ran diagonal split circuits? I know my E-plate vauxhall cavalier, my H-plate ford escort and my H-plate rover all did.

If you had a total failure you'll want to be checking a few more bits upstream.

Back to the immediate concerns - thank God you didn't have a big one!

Sorry i just read it again "brake line" , so does this mean youre getting some fancy overbraided ones?

Bad shi-ite James, glad you & the 4 are ok though. Wern't you having some from brake (abs sensor iirc etc) probs a year or so ago? Related?
Had a bit of a near miss today too, though in a completely different league to yours- & just slightly aggravated by myself
Today is the 1st time I've been out for a prowl in the 'liner since getting back in the UK. Car feels & sounds good, sun is shining-all is well in the world of tuttle. Anyway stopped at some lights, some turkey & his missus in front is emptying his car of trash via the sun-roof, most of it is landing on my bonnet. Give him an encouraging little toot on the horn- take it home chap, I hate litter. Recieve a pair of 'fingers' out of each window. Lights change, road is clear, I show my displeasure by going around his sluggish mondrero, with some gusto-I admit. Next thing I know my view is blocked by something like a bin liner which he has artfully chucked out & has snagged on one of the wiper blades. Blind on the wrong side,go or brake? I went for the latter, luckily still empty & held every one up.
Can't win em all

Oh yeah... total brake failure simply isn't fun, regardless. It also has the annoying habit of damaging confidence in *any* subsequent car.

I had a slight problem braking from 110 mph at Lavant bend at Goodwood...

Was a bit scary to say the least. If it had happened 5 seconds earlier I'd have been 110 mph in the wall and (hopefully) a sad thread on Pistonheads. I'm now a bit paranoid about my brakes...

Er............. *JAW DROPS* can safely say that none of the discs looked like that, or the calipers at first glances.

The lines are already uprated braided and only done about 8K. No idea about the circuitry of the set up, but there was definite loss out of the near side and no resistance when depressing the brake pedal.

All I can say is a) I'm glad it was in a reasonably safe place it happened, b) we were close to home and c) I wasn't driving as you KNOW I would have got the blame! (had been driving around in it all morning but at no more than 40mph).

A magnificent reason to never ever go near drilled disks.

This isn't the first time I've heard of them failing in a big way.

Let's put it this way, I could push the pedal down to the floor and still hit sixty in about 6 seconds. That, to me, is total brake failure. Yes, there was a little tiny bit of braking left, but nothing remotely approaching safe.

I've *got* fancy braided ones. If I find they have failed, I will not be a happy bunny.

Didn't feel like ABS at all. I felt something go, and when I came back to the car (low loader turned up) 30 mins later there was a puddle of fluid by one of the wheels. I suspect something has gone in the plumbing.

My language, at seeing that picture, was not repeatable.

Get her looked over James - if it's split circuit trying to do that should have seen you driving round in circles with smoke everywhere!

Have you got an aftermarket master cylinder in there? That might be rigged differently... All of this simply increases the 'thankgod' factor!

Sorry to hear of your woes MrE & Bint, but glad you're all ok (including the 4!)

With regards to drilled discs, I dimply don't see the point in having them on a road car.

Race cars, yes but for the road, I don't see what they truly offer above a quality set of grooved/vented discs and good pads.

Great! So you spend all this money on making a N Reg car a Wanna-Be-Race car and you rarely go over 40mph - you guys are my heros.

Erm. It frequently does a lot more than 40mph. We just tend to keep it slightly sane when pottering around town.

And for the record, it's not a wanna-be race car. I don't want a race car. They're hideous to drive 'normally' and not usually too good on the road. I want a fast road car.

Er..........."Wanna-Be-Race" car?? I'd say 250+bhp on a 4WD Jap car with suspension that glues it to corners and brakes that stop (usually....) faster than the thing can get to 60 more than a wannabe race car.

As Mr E quite rightly said, I had popped over to a friends' house that morning and the maximum speed limit to get to theirs was 40mph - call me old fashioned, but I'd rather not lose my licence/get points for speeding in a built up area or look like a prize tw@t for speeding in low mph ares. IE most chavs with a nova etc who feel like they need to prove something.

I thought PH was a bit more grown up than this..........

Edit: ahhhhhh my mistake, there was me thinking I was replying to a fellow high octaned blooded PH'er and not someone who's not actually posted anything regarding knowledge of automobiles with the exception of requiring an arial.................

Yeah Hmmmmm - 'Fast road car' WHAT on the back of a recovery truck!

Well you got the problem fixed fast enough - I just seen a car with the same reg as yours going through the congestion charging zone in London

I would say that Jap cars are reliable until people like YOU play about with them and thats why they end up useless - WELL DONE

Er so in 3 years of ownership and nothing having ever gone wrong with her, you suddenly jump on the back of what could just be a badly fitted brake hose? That could happen to anyone?

FFS, it's not been 'played' with - that car is in tip top condition and worth £10K. Until I see some evidence that you're not a troll with nothing better to do than spam forums with your lack of car knowledge, please have a ;

on me.
