To all those sensible Skyline owners,

A mate of mine has a 1993(???) Skyline R32, 2.0 single turbo. I'm sold, my GTi may as well dig its own grave!

Unfortunately, it has developed intermittent engine probs. It is a fairly fresh import, everything under the bonnet looks amazingly clean. On acceleration, every now and then, the engine dies, sometimes refusing to rev above 2k, often stalling. So far he has checked the idle control valve, lambda sensor, cooling system, coil packs, ECU with no avail. Could it be a faulty fuel pump? Any suggestions?

He is in the forest of dean area if anyone has any possible local solutions.

Cheers.

If everything under the bonnet looks amazingly clean then it may have been steam-cleaned, which means water could have got into a few places. check leads etc, if nothing wrong there then water may have got into the ECU, which could be trickier.

ETA: looks like he's already checked ECU/coils, not sure what else is likely on the water-in-electrics front.

Try checking the AFM too, they can cause problems. Does it idle okay? If it idles fine that eliminates quite a few possibilities, including the fuel pump.

Forgot to mention that it has been running perfectly for almost a year... It hasn't been steamed or, powerwashed within that time so I can't imagine water ingress can be the cause.

Are there any ways of testing the AFM? I know on my Golf, I can check the resistances across the pins of the potentiometer.

Dont really want to spend £500 on a new AFM to find that it wasn't the problem!

Take the afm off and get some carb cleaner and spray it, let it dry out and try it. Worked for me.

sounds like an AFM problems to me. check the connections on the plug. the AFM is by the airbox / induction kit by the way.
My R32 had the same problem, turned out to be one of the wires on the plug was knackered. resoldered and it never caused a bother.
failing that do as suggested, carb cleaner sorts them out a treat. be VERY careful as they're very delicate pieces of kit and break easily, as i've found out.

Sounds like afm to me too, they are a common service part prob, & even 2nd hand ones are sought after(new around £250-300) Hi-flow Z300 (ZX32) AFMs are part of a popular mod if you have a prog ecu.
When checking AFM values they should be in the 4-7 ohm range, if its of any help.

Car sorted, it was the AFM. Found a cheap one in Australia on ebay. Cheers for the help.
