Guys, what's the average clutch life on am Mx-5 Mk2? And is it normal for the bite to be high on its travel?

Also, how much one cost?

My MX-5 (a Mk1) is still on it's original clutch after 12 years and 80,000+ miles, and for the last 3 years of it's life it's had a supercharger and a few track days to contend with!

Replacement clutches here:

www.mx5parts.co.uk/index.php/cPath/53_62

£99.95 for a "quality Japanese brand" or £140 for a Sachs...

It might not be your clutch.

On your MX5 you should have a clutch slave cylinder, take off the front right side wheel and you should be able to see it, it looks like this.

Pull back the rubber boot, if it's wet, it's had it and may cause your clutch pedal to be travel high/low/non-existent, these are a common problem on MX5 and can be repaired and replaced easily if you follow the tutoral below, parts available from MX5 Parts.

Slave cylinders do let go occasionally and it'll make you think your clutch has had it, unless you REALLY REALLY rag the clutch you can't knacker it well you can if you shove a turbo or supercharger in your engine bay.

I've got a spare OEM clutch if you want it, in very good condition but Im putting a turbo on mine so I need a beefier clutch.

Cheers guys.

So the general gist is that the clutch is strong enough but it may be the slave cylinder.

Thank you. Once again I bow to PH's superior knowledge

Echo the slave cylinder comment.

My g/fs MX-5 has 78K on the clock and is on its original clutch.

1999 MK2.

$170.00 US dollars for clutch disc, pressure plate and throw-out bearing. A stock OEM clutch can realistically go 35,000 "street miles" or just two days of "track time at "Laguna seca" for me.

Mine is 16 years young and has 175,000 km's on the clock. It has also done a few sprints and track days. We have had it for 6 years, and I know the previous owner well. As far as I know its on the original clutch. Now I have tempted fate, it will probably fail next week.....

Yes you have, the curse of the flying monkey may descend on your MX5.
