I know a lot of people like them and I wouldn't want to detract from them.
However, for me personally, my research led me to conclude that compared to, say, an Audi S4 2.7TT Avant the Galant VR4 is far less acclerative, much thirstier, heavier and requires servicing far more often.

However, as I said, some people love 'em and it would be boring world if we all liked the same thing.

Old post I know, but you never know who's looking

£9K for a W is about £1000 too much IMO. There is so much to look for on these cars you should be wary. That said, the nature of the beast dictates previous owners will have looked after them, and if you get a good one it will run forever with proper maintenance.

Servicing isn't too bad if you can DIY. Major service (£250) once a year and oil every 4.5k miles at about £60 for the good stuff is all they need, pretty standard for a Jap machine. They can be heavy on tyres depending on how you drive, they are powerful and heavy and are permamnent 4wd so this is common dog. Brakes need upgrading if they already haven't been, either front discs and pads to prevent fade or go for a Brembo upgrade which should be bolt on from an E6-9 if you've got a facelift VR4.

In terms of speed, they'll do 140 all day without blinking, although this isn't recommended and 60 is reached in anything between 5.4 and 6.6 depending on where you read. The grip is a major talking point of the car, with the AWD and AYC systems it goes on forever, i've accelerated out of a sweeping bend overtaking a 111S and leaving him for dust, entering a corner is a different kettle of fish though, remember it weighs alot!

Anything else, just shout

Cheers for that WildCards ( a fellow poker player?? ), as it happens the garage in the end gave me a good price for my Jeep and i bought the Galant, it had covered only 20,000 miles and has been dealer serviced 11 times, so i knew the car had been well looked after. I know it goes well, but can they be chipped etc or is any increase in BHP a major cost? Thank you for any advice in advance, Jez

You have three two options in terms of ECU tuning. The first is to buy a Dastek unichip and have it setup for around £740. This is a piggyback ECU which will give you in the region of 30 more ponies to play with and a similiar amount of extra torque. Some of us over at www.clubvr4.com are currently trying to get numbers together to take up a group buy offered by WRC Tech at Silverstone which will save us about £100 on this.

Second option is to buy an Emanage Blue or Ultimate and all the associated gubbins and do the setup yourself. This has the potential to reap even better gains than the unichip, but no one knows the perfect setup. A few members have tried this with limited success, but it does mean you can adjust settings on the fly with a laptop on your passenger seat. An Emanage Ultimate with everything required should cost similiar to the group buy Unichip price.

There are quite a few little mods you can do for a reasonable budget, firstly being a brake upgrade from an E6-9 which should cost around £400 if your lucky with ebay. Fitting an uprated exhaust and decat pipe should help with mid range torque. New turbo pipes, intercooler a decent CAI kit should help too.

Check out www.takakaira.com and do a search for VR4 / 6A13 / Galant or Legnum and you'll find quite a few upgrade parts to choose from.

Feel free to pop over to the club and join in the group buys though, the more the merrier.

Jezgod, if you want a Unichip mate, get over to www.clubvr4.com and register your interest, we are struggling for confirmed people at the minute, we only need 5 to get this, plenty of people want6 it, but not many are willing to out their hand in their pocket. Bit of support would help if you know what I mean.

A deposit is needed as soon as we have the 5, then you can have the chip fitted and mapped and pay the balance at any point in the next 6 months. Don't know if you know WRC Tech, but they seem like great chaps. We had an RR day there last Saturday, very helpful, very knowledgable.
