take a look at these sites, www.nissangtir.co.uk or www.gtiroc.com -the forums have loads of info - do a search and it will all come up.

what sort of temps is he getting? what are they when driving normally? on boost?

usual oil temps are around 85c once fully warm. may creep up to 90c on a hot day or after a blast. ive seen temps upto 110c once or twice after a spirited run, but just make sure you let it cool down nicely before switching off.

i use sikoline pro s 10w50, others use millers or castrol rs.

change your thermostat and coolant as well, the gtir runs a water to oil cooler as standard, if the waters too hot it'll heat up the oil and vice versa. (the standard water temp guage isnt particularly accurate - mine sits in the middle from 60c upwards and ive seen over 95c and it hasnt moved past the middle).

a front mounted oil cooler is a worth while mod esp if running above standard power it makes a noticable difference to engine temps, whats more important though is that your mates got an uprated fuel pump and preferably a front mounted intercooler. get the fueling checked with a wide band lambda sensor

Might be worth double checking the mapping to. If the engine is running to lean this will increase the engine temp.

thanks for the advice chaps, well he has told me that litterally booting it for 10 - 15 seconds hard can get it up to 110!! which sounds a lot to me? i would suspect it needs setting up, like you say.
