MR2 Roadster Immobiliser
Discussion
Hi,
got a 2000 MR2 and I know that the alarm works. However, how is the immobilser "mobilised". I got in the car and locked central locking using the remote. I then unlocked using the remote and was sat in the car for a few minutes before it automatically re-locked itself. When I then put the key in and started it, I had no problem other than the red alarm light was on by the mirror switch. However, when I opened the door, the alarm went off.
So my question is, should the engine have been immobilised as well? I am not sure if the immobiliser operates by the key being in the ignition or not. Its standard alarm / immo.
Thanks.

Maybe my query does sound a bit dodgy...only bought the car in January so if there is a problem, want to get it fixed under the 1 year warranty.
No, there is no drive away locking. I accidently hit the remote lock button once I was in, so pressed the unlock on the remote. Was sat looking at a map when the car re-locked itself. Thought nothing of it, put the key in and started fine. Just wondering if the car should have been immobilised. Also strange the alarm didn't go off until I stopped and tried to open the door.

You accidently pressed the lock button - it alarmed and immobilised. You pressed the unlock button - the immobiliser switched off. Because none of the doors were opened or shut, the cars autolock feature then locked the car after 30 secs, without deadlocks, and activated the alarm and immobilser. When you opened the door, the alarm will have seen it as an unauthorised entry and set the alarm off - the car will still be immobilised. If you then pressed unlock again, this will cancel the alarm, the coded key will cancel the immobiliser when put in the ignition.
What caught you out is the function where the alarm, ultrasonics and immobiliser are reset if the car is locked, unlocked and then a door isnt opened within 30secs. As if you caught the unlock button when putting the key in your pocket after locking the car - it locks itself.
1 click - Alarm, immobiliser and ultrasonics
2 clicks within 3 secs of each other- Alarm, immobiliser, ultrasonics and deadlocking
3 clicks within 5 secs- Alarm, immobiliser and deadlocking (i.e. roof down) - signalled by a flash and then a long flash of the indicators

The immobilser is a passive system, the key has a chip inside and there is a transceiver fitted around the ignition barrel.
As soon as the key gets close to the ignition barrel, the system is disarmed.
It's very easy to press a button on the keyfob while turning the key, i've done that a few times on mine.
Drive away locking can be activated by a toyota dealer. at least it can on my 03-----> model.
