A friend of mine has an RX-7. The engine has so many small problems with it that I think we are looking at a full engine rebuild by now.

Does anyone have any good names of people who do this kind of stuff? I'm in the south-west of England, it would be quite useful to have it done somewhere relatively nearby.

No doubt Mr RX7 himself will be along in a minute....

Close batty it's Rotechnicks www.rotechniks.co.uk

They are based just off the M4 at juntion 11. They did loads of work for me on my 5, they are very skilled and really do take their time to get things right for you.

Infact, they are so good I managed to persuade them to work on our MR2 too!

Ross Juniper who runs Dragon Performance did my rebuild and modifications and I would 100% recommend them. The build was done on budget, the workmanship was top drawer and the engine feels very strong.

My mate uses RE-Worx for all his work and is happy with their standards. He didn't have his rebuild done by them but I think his was done about 6 years ago before Re-Worx started up.

If you have a look at my profile you'll see the work I had done by Ross and if you want to get hold of him his details are:

E-mail: ross@dragonperformance.co.uk
Phone: 01404 891888
Address: Dragon Performance Ltd
Unit 10
Flightway Business Park
Dunkeswell
Honiton
Devon
EX14 4RD

All the best

Id stick to Carl Harris, or Worx, rotechniks changed hands and Ive no experience of them now.

Personal Opinion would be to avoid Dragon as I dont think their work is too hot.

Unfortunately the founder Simon passed away last year. All the staff have remained and the service remains the same.

RX Motors also do a good job and are one of the most reasonable in terms of price. They're near Blandford Forum, rebuild with new housings is 2500 all in. They did mine last Feb 05 and going strong.

Has your mate done a compression test?

Definately a good bunch but not The people. Certainly know their engines though as they built and run Eurpoe's quickest (1/4 mile) Jap car...

I'm off there this afternoon to dropthe rex off for a new clutch and mapping

How so expensive , it has very few moving parts so why 2-3 k ?

They do? I know re:worx used to use them for mapping before they got their own dyno. Pretty sure they don't do engine work on rotaries though.

Cost will depend on the state of the 'dead' engine and how much is re-usable.

If it's just a refresh and housings, endplates and rotors are fine then it'll be cheaper. A new set of housings are ~£800.

Just gaskets, tips, springs and seals will be pretty cheap (~£200).

The rest would be labour, new hoses, etc.

How much would a rebuild of a piston engine that had failed properly (timing chain failure for example)? TurboT could let us know for a Supe engine...

One of my Tuscans threw a piston through the block which I guess constitutes a proper failure and the first quote was £13K but after the dealer told them to take a reality pill it came down to £6.5K (and got even lower when TVR Power did the rebuild instead of the factory - but I didn't see that final cost as I was driving a Cerbera by then!)

Bear in mind that parts for rotaries are not as common which usually means more expensive - I don't think £2.5 to £3K is too bad for a speacialist rebuild...

Cheers

well put it this way, we can get a new Toyota shortblock for the Supra for £1800-2000, and then if you wanted uprated rods and pistons for approx 4k. The stock block will happily take 600 bhp though. Now if you want a 3.4 stroker and shimless bucket race head, you wouldnt see much change from £15k+, but these will take in excess of 1200 bhp ( proven) and have run 7 second 1/4's. Horses for courses

Edit, BTW, the 2JZ-GTE supra engine is non interference so the timing belts snapping is not and issue on stock compression, even upto HKS 272 cams. Toyota weren't daft
