like for like replacement for MX6
Discussion
Unfortunately my beloved Mazda MX6 has been prematurely sent to the great scrapyard in the sky due to a nasty patch of black ice.
The MX6 was my daily runaround - something which was nice and easy to drive yet pretty nippy when i needed it, reasonably cheap to run and maintain, reliable, plus i never worried about parking her in neighbourhoods i didn't know.
So, i now need a replacement, around 10 years old, japanese made, with less than 100k on the clock, spending maximum of £2k - preferably less.
So i have been thinking of another MX6, a toyota Celica, or a Nissan 200zx.
Anybody suggest something else which might be a worthy replacement for the MX6?

Insurance premiums a problem? Age/points wise,that is.
I would deffo say a 200sx for all your above reasons, but you are looking at ins grp 17/18.
OR: Mitsi Galant (vr4 prob out of budget tho)
Honda Prelude 2.0-2.2ltr from as little as £1200.00
Toyota Celica
WILD CARD CAR!
Volvo 745ti.....
Yes really, quicker than you'd think. Pick 'em up for peanuts- I predict this type of thing will be sought after as the next banger/budget drift special.
2.3ltr, SOHC, intercooled T3 tubby,4 cyl
Live rear axle
some tuneable parts from 'scrap sources' 220-250 bhp fairly easily obtainable
literally built like a tank
& comfy too

Cheers all,
I was browsing at the Preludes but couldn't see any in my price range. Will take another look.
Insurance group not a prob in terms of age (i'm not too old but old enough to enjoy cheaper quotes) and have no points. Will check out a few of the cars you mention. Although not japanese, has anyone tried a Ford Probe? - Basically same car as an MX6 i believe, but they are cheaper (although admittedly not as nice)

Ford Probe??
Hmmm been considering a Ford Probe. Does anyone know what the 2.5 V6 engines in a Probe and MX6 are good for mileage wise?
A skyline would be a bit too high maintenance for me - remember it's my second car, so has to be reliable and relatively cheap to maintain

Probes....hmmmm... Not a bad looking car, nor a bad interior.
Everything I've heard about the probes is that it's an OK drive but nothing to really grab you, probably a much better drive than its predecessor the,(cool but woefully outdated tech Capri). There's a lot of neglected probes around. Something with fsh etc ought to be fine mileage wise. Have seen quite a few of these going through auction recently. Also seems to be a growing interest in clean examples, esp with leather, so possibly could go up in value! even these have been going for as little as (85k miles) <>£1200-1500.
Update - well, i figured that the best like-for-like replacement for an MX6 was...........
Another MX6 .
It's up in wakefield at the mo, but all being well, and if the garage can fix the dodgy boot latch, there shall be an MX6 once again gracing my drive some time next week. By writing one off, it just made me realise how much i do love these cars

I had a probe, not the worst, but apart from the half decent looks (although it did have standard 3-spokes..!!!) there was nothing that good about it. Yes it shares a similar V6 engine as the MX-6, but one slight difference the probe is mondeo based, and FRONT WHEEL DRIVE where as the MX-6 is RWD.......... Its all sorted now by the sounds of it anyway....

The MX6 is front wheel drive too . It's an interesting point you have about the Probe being Mondeo based. I have driven my BIL's Mondeo ST24 which has a 2.5l V6 engine in it, and to be honest it is slow in comparison to the squivalent engined MX6, plus the MX6 has a much smoother gear change and the accelerator pedal has more travel and seems much more responsive

Really...??? I always thought it was RWD..... guess I was wrong on that one. Does the MX-6 not use a slightly higher tuned version of the 2.5 V6? Again, I could be wrong, but is it not Probe - 168Bhp, MX-6 - 190Bhp........???
The probe concept was kicking about for sometime was it not? Maybe that was seen before the Mundaneo...?
Had an L plate MX6 a couple of years ago. The facts are:
Probe and MX6 same floorpan, and same V6 engine. Four pot Probes also exist, using a Mazda four banger. Four pot MX6's are also available in the US. 2L V6 MX6's are also available as Jap imports - but be careful when buying an import, it's not that clear which is which (2.5 or 2.0L0. In fact, what is also not terribly clear is whether it's a KL engine (170 bhp ish) or the KL-ZE - which was a Jap market only engine with more like 200 horses.
The 2.5's were all variable induction, that is a series of three butterfly valves varied the inlet lengths in the manifold, which gave the cars quite good performance throughout the rev range, that is it rev'd forever but also had a bit of pull down low.
The only problem with these cars I reckon was poor fuel economy, even with everything in working order, )2 sensors etc., I still struggled to get more than about 23 to the gallon. Also I did put a rod through the bottom of the sump, luckily the exhaust downpipe caught it... wouldn't have been so bad but I was doing 65 in fifth at the time. That was at 120k miles...
Incidentally they're all FWD, only variation is some Jap ones added four wheel steer.
