Hi guys, not sure if this is the site I posted details earlier of my daughters woes on her MX5, when it suddenly didnt seem to steer right. (wont bore you with the details, but those of you kind enough to offer advise, will recognise the contents - and thanks again for your input).

Anyway she got the steering arm replaced, (same diagnosis by two garages), apparantly before the incident, and after the replacement, on full left lock, in reverse, (coming out of her driveway), she hears a knocking from the front of the car.

She has found a few websites which apparantly say this is normal, something to do with the design/build of the car. Its a 1991 Japanese import. Doesnt make any noises on full right lock.

Cant look myself, I am up in Aberdeen, she is down in Windsor. I have a sneeky suspision my Granada did something like that on full lock.

My wife's 1997 MX5 Harvard also knocked on full lock as well ..... only in the cold though. Had it checked and all was OK!

I now have a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX ..... which knocks on full lock too !! Checked and also found to be OK.

Maybe it is something to do with the power steering rack that affects more than a few cars ...........

My car (1999 MK2) only exhibited this when I uprated the suspension and springs.

It can be usually be two things, check how tight the bushes are on the front anti-rollbar, if these get loose they can cause the knocking.

Get the alignment checked out, this can solve many problems in regards to handling and solved my knocking problem.

Also check out this this MX5 Owners Club messageboard link which may put your worries at rest, this thread is more about tyres which has been mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

Vipers, it may take a few days to get a reply and even then it may be a blank, but I'll ask colleagues at Mazda R&D in Irvine (here) about the problem; so, check your thread later in the week. Meanwhile don't worry. The car is inherently safe in design. You're daughter will be fine.

And have a good weekend.

Thank you very much for that.
