Scoobies are jolly Safe

So say some American chappies

Crash Bang Wallop
Crash Bang Wallop

The 2006 Model Year Subaru Legacy saloon and Sports Tourer have been given the first-ever ‘Top Safety Pick Gold’ award by America’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in America.

it's the first time a midsize-class car has scored the highest accolade – ‘Good’ – in every category.

Areas covered included side impacts at 31 mph, offset frontal barrier at 40 mph and rear crash impact where the stationary Legacy is struck by a car at 20 mph and the head-restraint mechanism checked for neck-injury protection.

All tests are conducted at speeds higher then the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards require.

In scoring ‘Good’ in all categories – leading to a Gold award – the latest Legacy beat US-market models such as the Audi A3, A4 and even the larger A6, plus the latest 2006 MY Volkswagen Jetta and Passat.

The ratings reflect injury-protection measures recorded on two SID-11s dummies, one in the driver’s seat and one directly behind.

Essentially the same car structurally, the latest UK Subaru Legacy line-up starts with the new 165 PS Legacy 2.0R AWD saloon at £16,995 on-the-road.

In congratulating his American colleagues, Subaru (UK) Limited Managing Director, Peter Kinnaird, chirped: "Everyone knows how important safety is regarded in the US and it is to Subaru’s credit that it has produced such a strong overall package.

"Like all Subarus, the Legacy is designed to have high levels of roadholding and handling agility in all conditions – helping the driver avoid the accident in the first place. This is due to its symmetrical all-wheel drive and low-centre-of-gravity ‘boxer’ engine.

"However, should the worse happen, it is reassuring to know the Legacy scores top in all the most common ‘real-world’ accident scenarios."

Yeah OK it is safe at 30 & 40 mph, what happens if some muppet hits you at 70 mph?

But then again it will not matter what car you are in, you are going to be pretty screwed at that speed.

Good to see a safe car though.

You would hope if they are going 70 they might at least try and brake and slow it down a bit, 70mph, as you say, will not be pretty for anyone, even a truck.

Please dont be clown!

How likely is it for you to get hit at 70 MPH . .If you are so worried , please feel free to purchase a t90 batle tank . . The point here is that Subaru have raised the bar and outshone the Volkswagon A3 - basically setting a new industry standard. . .Oooops . .Sorry . .Audi or whatever!

This is the kind of mentality little women with Prada hand bags adopt and end up driving Range Rovers . --- Its safer you see . . .

Hitting someone at 70 isn't unlikely. The closing speed on most A roads if you hit an oncoming vehicle could be 120mph remember - whacking breaks on will scrub a chunk of that off, but it still takes some distance to slow to zero, with the distance needed even great in a head on.

Anyway, kind of neither here nor there as I think it would be safe to assume that a car that dissipates enerby well at 30mph is more likely to do a better job of the same at highers speed too (although will not be unable to defy physics or stop you dying from your organs being ripped free).

Good work Subaru, how about investing a little in interior and exterior aesthetics? I'd buy a decent looking Impreza (If they get round to doing it).

It's a fantastic car in every respect, but not many of us are buying them because we are badge snobs!

I spec'd an A6 Avant with a 2.7 Deisel (180PS) with everything I needed/ wanted, inc. Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Heated seats, CD changer etc. etc. Result £41k or my car plus £636 pm and a £13k balloon payment at 3 years.

Rang around and got a Subaru, Sports Tourer 3.0R Spec B (6Cyl silky smooth boxer with 250PS) plus all of the above at £5k off list = £23k that's £18k less for virtually the same car and I really don't see why I should pay £15k+ for four interlocking circles on the bonnet!

PS I thought it seemed well fitted for safety, but after this reoprt I'm well chuffed

Right-whats the story behind this crash then?
You can't go posting pics like that without a blow by blow account of the crash-we want all the gory details. That assuming you remember it!!!

Think I've posted it elsewhere, but it was a bit of a giggle....

The road is the road that goes North out of Hove into the South Downs. I was in the mood for a good bit of high speed antics, so set off into the downs with plenty of boot and sliding through most of the corners...

About 2 miles in there's a corner which is pretty horrible. It's off camber and sharpens half way though. It's also rising so you can't see the exit until you're past the crest. A little like Paddock Hill bend at Brands.

Anyway, the Scoob generally flatters but even the car & superb chassis couldn't save me... Sliding through the corner I over corrected and went into a lovely slide at around 55mph I reckon. Given a larger corner it might have been OK, but it wasn't and I hit the kerb sideways - This flipped the car into its lid after which I went down the verge, through a fence post or two and came to a stop at the side of the road.

I remember all of it quite clearly. That great 'slow motion' feeling as you empty your pants.

The stereo kept going, which was nice, but in fact the front had been smashed off and the key had also snapped in the ignition so I couldn't shut it up. The car was a UK Turbo 2000 which was red as its original colour. No panel could be saved, the gearbox and engine were both smashed off their mountings, the inlet and exhaust manifolds were smashed in fact there was nothing the insurance could salvage.

I put an elbow through the window which leaves the only scars - other than that it's thanks to Subaru!

Cheers.

You sure did a proper job. Its no thanks to the likes of you that insurance is bloody high on these things!!!!

You are indeed lucky. I would have thought you would have had some bad whiplash at least but I suppose those bucket seats support the head well.

Many thanks for wishing whiplash on me but no, I had absolutely no injuries apart from the elbow.

Insurance paid out around £9k for this, but I've been driving for 14 years and have paid out well over an average of £1.5k per year. Sort of suggests the insurance companies are still well in profit!
