Looking to buy an old MR2. 1991 onwards - was just wondering about the potential running costs/maintenance costs for the 2.0 of that age. Things that go wrong with them etc.

Anyone have any experience?

Gaz, what is the solution for the sticking calipers? Short of replacing the whole lot? Ive heard that you can get a rebulid kit and DIY..... I have developed a weird noise from the rear, sounds like a wheel bearing due to its rhythmic noise, but Im also pretty sure it could be the pad / caliper coming into contact with each other......

I had a 91 car from new to 80k, never had a single thing go wrong with it, just cemented my love of Toyota

Had mine for 2 years.

Apart from servicing I had to replace a sticky caliper and replace the rear brakes.

Other costs were 2 new rear tyres, which were my choice as the cheap ones on the car provided no grip.

The cars are almost bullet proof and as you can see from other replies the running costs are low.

Go for it.

had mine for 2 years with 57k on the clock, i added 10k to that. changed the oil every 3k miles with mobil 1 15-50w and had it serviced every 5k, cost me a bomb in oil changes and servicing but it was all worth it for grin factor, oh insurance hurt a bit. i got banned from driving though so downgraded to a BMW 328 miss my MR2 turbo loads! just got far to tempted by that kick in the back of my rev2 turbo

Hi

Had a 92 T Bar for a good while, running costs are very good indeed as MPG isn't bad (high 20's low 30's) servicing is as any other Toyota, depreciation is basically none existant and its a Toyota so if its been well looked after it'll look after you.

Picked up some good tips from the Owners club that have worked for me.
T Bar seals = On a nice day, clean out the gutters, and clean the rubber seals, then wipe the seals over with vaseline, solves most leaks.
Brake calipers are prone to sticking, but when they do don't muck about and don't buy new ones as they're very expensive. Have them reconditioned instead, had mine done by Brake Engineering at Wrexham came back gleaming, everything that moves replaced, new pads all for around a Ton per pair - no problems since.

Last bit is that if you do go far an early car make sure its at least a 92 as the very early ones (14" alloys & high ride height) are interesting in the handling department, in 92 they dropped the car about 2" and fitted wider 15" alloys, makes a big difference.

I had a '92 Rev2 turbo.
I bought it from an Jap import showroom, and sold it for £150 less than I paid for it after 2 years.
I loved that car. Nothing went wrong with it, and it was my only car, used every day.
I had the cambelt replaced by Toyota, everything else (servicing etc.) I did myself. The T-tops are great, they can be removed in a couple of minutes and just stash behind the seats.

The turbo model has got plenty of power, and it handles well.

I'd definitely have another one, if I had to sell my current cars.

Had mine since summer, use it a lot (£800 spent on petrol so far!).

Love it.

I'm doing mostly motorway miles and my average economy is 32mpg now. That includes no-holds-barred sliproad use and frequent drives in the country to show the car I still love it (posted one of those up on here after a few post-match drinks didn't I?).

Insurance hurt a bit, a clear 50% above my last car, but worth every penny.

I've changed a few bits on it, but none of them were essential repairs - just me tinkering. Good oil is expensive but worth it. All the maintenance tasks have been DIY so far.

Good tyres are also expensive, but you can't drive a sports car on budget remoulds...

It's a hard top so I don't suffer the leak problem at all. The handling is quite a bit better than the t-bar version IMO.

It broke down once (dodgy fuel) but managed to haul itself home regardless. I admire a car that never gives up.

The only annoying feature is a mild hesitation when it's cold, but that soon clears.

As anyone who's been on here a while will know; I've always loved these cars and I'm well-biased. That said, I expected it to disapoint me.

It's NEVER done that!

Edited to add: sorry - it's a '92 rev 2 GT Turbo.

Al,

What are you paying for insurance if you don't mind me asking?

I know your not that much older than me (i'm 23) so it would be interesting to see what the damage would be!

Really want to change the Golf in the Summer when I finish uni (Great car, but as the insurance is getting so cheap (been quoted £319 FC for when the renewal is due) it must mean its time to upgrade!

Cheers Russ,

Did you drive one of the NA before getting your Turbo?

I quite fancy a T-Bar and not sure if I can stretch to the extra insurance for the Turbo.
