What Jap car for 3.5k ..........

Isnt the 200SX coming in too high on the Insurance - if not, top choice!

I want as much speed as possible
I take it you're talking acceleration here. Off the line, or real-world?
If real-world, then Prelude 2.2 is probably worth a punt. 200SX (S14) definitely is in both categories, if you can find an unmolested one. Anyone know if MiVEC FTO's were grey-only?!?

well yes and no...
Ralliart imported 500 cars to the UK as UK cars, but are still classed as Grey imports by Mitsubishi...
mad i know..
so yeah they are all really, and insuring them requires a large tube of KY...
still nothing quiet turns the head like a FTO @ full chat

Other wise a 1.8 MX5 would be my choice - not the quickest, but bags of fun and handling is superb....
Running cost/insurance wise, I like this idea. Not the quickest but you'd certainly be able to have loads of real world fun in 1.8 MX5.
Sorry if this offends anyone, but I found the MX5 'felt' slower than my fiancee's Fiesta! (Zetec-S, but still, 140bhp vs 100bhp, where'd Mazda hide all the power?!?)
It's beautifully poised, good driving position, nice communication. But not a car to buy if you want the feeling of speed. Ditto MR2 Mk3 (well, less communicative, but otherwise ditto). 306GTi6 as well I guess...engine is too smooth for it's own good.
For sensible running costs, look to a Prelude Mk4 or a Civic VTi. For real power look at S14 if insurance allows.

I had the use of my dad's mk1 1.6 MX5 for about 8 months and it was great fun. He had a modest chip on it, lowered, full stainless and it cornered like it was on rails. An Mx5 is never going to be blisteringly quick, but with a bit of fettling and driving it with the roof down on some great B-Roads - you get a great buzz - similar to an original Mini! IMHO it doesnt always have to be fast to be fun!
