To cut a long story short, I'm toying with the idea of putting the Celica GT-4 engine in my girlfriend's RAV4. Thought it'd be a bit of a laugh with Impreza-style power. I'm not looking for Fensport-type monster power upgrades, just over 200 lb ft and 200 bhp, which I understand is pretty much standard for most of the engines.

I'm not a Toyota engine buff - and I hear a lot of engine part numbers on here (I suppose we're just as guilty on the Porker forum with model codes etc.). Given that I'm not looking for more than 300 bhp / lb ft and not wanting to internally modify the engine, which is the motor I should choose?

I'd rather spend silly money on making my car go faster than the bird's RAV, but it's actually surprised the hell out of me and is bloody good fun to drive. Just needs a wodge more torque, the turbo Celica engine sounds like it'd fit the bill perfecto. However from these forums it sounds like there are a hell of a lot of variants!!!

Which one is easiest to source, reasonably cheap to acquire and isn't known for major aggro re: ECU integration?

As I said I won't be messing with crank, rods, pistons, cams etc. but it will obviously need custom inlet piping and exhaust (though if the manifold fits it may luckily just need a pipe from after the turbo to the rear silencer...)

Would 250 lb ft / bhp be reasonable? Standard now is 156 bhp, probably only around 130 lb ft but I'd be surprised if the transmission couldn't take the hike. Not bothered about fuel consumption, the standard 2 litre motor is crap anyway (I get average 23 mpg)

I've had a scour round the TRD websites and can't find much relevant info... perhaps most RAVs are bought by girls with no intention of engine swaps etc.

If this has been covered extensively before, tell me what to search for (and other forums if I'm likely to have more luck there). There's stuff in the USA but they seem to have very different engine configs than UK cars.

Many TIA!

Youll be wanting the 3SGTE engine then!
200 bhp and around 200ft pounds of torque for starters.
Go for the later version from the ST205 and youll get 255 bhp and scope for more besides.

Personally i think your a nutter. I like it.

3rd generation 3S-GTE, as fantastic Mr Fox has already suggested.

I wouldn't even attempt to integrate it with the Rav4 ECU. Get a front clip and keep the ST205 ECU. Stock ECU with a de-cat and a boost controller is good for 280/300bhp on standard turbo and internals. Chargecooler will cope.

Might have fun bolting the transmission up, and I hope there's the room for all the cooling......

Should be fun if you can make it work.
