....and so does my turbo! Seems like an extra 50 bhp with all this dense cold air!

Not so keen on 160 miles to a full tank though....

Speaking of winter and MRT's - Al and Gaz, or indeed any other MRT owners / ex owners - whats this thing all about the ecu limiting boost in cold weather? Sometimes the ECU wont let me boost above 3/4 on the gauge , but other times, like tonight, it was boosting to the max!

it won't boost if below 4 degrees to stop you killing yourself and it won't boost fully if it's to hot to stop you blowing it up. think it's the vsv thingy that controls it but can be deactivated easily i think. i left it on mine because i would spin and die on ice or pop a turbo in the heat being a complete moron like i am

It just doesnt seem very consistent - eg this morning 3/4 boost on slip road to m42, then 2 mins later, full boost in outside lane.....

Really? I've have full boost in sub zero temperatures on a similar engine.

Interesting- maybe chargecooling and being at the front changes things?

interesting...Off the Top of head an' all that.A (poorly maintained)Chargecooler being filled with liquid has the potential to become frozen solid. Would make some sense as an engine safety thing. As above at -4 deg C it would help stop you from killing yerself on black ice, makes perfect sense.

Don't forget that the more dense the air is, the less volume you need to meet the stoichiometric ratio. If your car boosts lower in very cold conditions I'd expect that it is trying to keep the A/F ratio correct as opposed to leaning out by pushing too much oxygen in by running full boost.

Also the air on a main road will be significantly warmer than on a side road due to other vehicles etc. Your engine bay may have also come up to temp by that point, meaning the air becomes less dense and you can get full boost again.

Stoich is 14.7 / 1 AFR.
If you're running say 12 / 1 on full boost, you would be slightly leaner on a cold day at say 12.5 / 1, but still rich enough not to det.

Dont know much about the MRT , dont think the ECU is clever enough to lower boost on cold days?

I fitted a boost controller to my rex to keep boost stable, HKS EVC, works a treat.

Bloody hell Gaz, not good.

Take it easy mate, stress is no joke. In your shoes I'd go to a GP and try to get signed off for a couple of days. Any good quack won't hesitate and any good employer won't complain.

As an aside - the manual for the MR2 says it lowers boost when the ambient temp is below 4 degrees C.

Russ, what the hell are you doing to get 160 miles per tank??????

The worst I've ever seen is 27mpg, and that was when I was doing 'demo drives'. My (rough) mental arythmatic puts you at 20mpg or less!

Take it easy for a day or two GB, Stress is a killer, Really!
I have to deal with a lot of NHS burocrat types ( talk about bloody mindedness & frustration ) When its all getting a bit much for me I like to imagine them on the bog, taking a really *uncomfortable* & strenuous dump! Works every time.
