Honda Civic Type-R for 2006?

Hints of UK release for pocket rocket

Type-R next summer?
Type-R next summer?
The British Motor Show, to take place next summer, is set to feature the new Civic Type-R, according to a story by Auto Express.

The report reckoned that a Honda spokesman hinted at the move by saying: "There's a desire to do something at the British Motor Show. Because of the plant at Swindon, the UK is considered our patch and we should be making big waves there."

With the new Civic standard model due to debut at the Geneva show in March, the UK in summer 2006 could well see the Type-R's unveiling, runs the argument.

That thing is still uglier than my dog!!
They'll need to do a lot of work to make the type R desirable IMO!

Looks better than the outgoing model, but does look a bit like a moon buggy.

And dump the brake-by-wire!

Its ok but IMO they shouldn't be making a 5 door Type R (as all the pictures suggest).
If you want a Type R then you get big wheels, sports seats and a tuned engine, all things that make it top of the range. I dont think this should be made into a familly car, the Sport is for that!

Brake by wire.

Sounds like a recipie for even less driver involvement at the cost of extracting a tiny winy little bit more performance in "Gran Turismo 4" stylee...

The current/old Civic Type R was slightly critisised for a relatively lifeless helm, and the new breed of hot hatches with electro hydraulic steering are loosing out in the feel stakes too.

Less driver involvement is a bad thing in this sector imho. I don't think many people want outright performance, and just want a fun, involving and fairly rapid drive.

Gonna be pants in the real world by the sounds of it, but it'll look great on paper and post decent lap times, just you'll fall asleep doing it!

Funnily enough, I was sent this link - www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=438105 - by someone at work today. It shows a Civic Si in touring car trim, and i reckon this will be a LOT more like what the new Type-R will be like. Looks very current Integra-like from the side.

I like it anyway!

strangely reminds me of an updated City Rover at first glance. Doesn't look particularly cohesive design imo

I think the design looks cohesive and will remain modern past 2010...which it needs to.

I still don't like it.

As for the Type-R tech...brake-by-wire will be BAD for most enthusiast drivers...even with good 4-ch ABS, you still lose the feel and trust...much like the elec PAS.

But IMHO a lot of hot-hatch drivers will still buy it - look at the sales of current Civic Type-R and prev-gen Leon Cupra & Cupra-R...neither of these cars is over-endowed with feel, yet they were some of the best-sellers in the hot-hatch market. Because of their stats!

Me? I'm going to go back to the old Integra...best Jap steering feel this side of an NSX, and beautifully judged brakes...sod the extra power, I don't need it.

Is that not the NA version of the Civic? Which is not the same as the Eur.

Yep, the new USDM coupe, which Europe currently isn't getting. Has shades of the old Accord Coupe around the C-pillar...which is a shame as that wasn't a cohesive design either. But then both were designed for the US market. If that's the direction coupe's are going you can keep them!!!

To be honest i had a Type-R..loved it too.

What we're looking at here is NOT the Type-R. Remember when they first released pictures of the current bog-standard Civic..looks like project gaymobile compared to the Type-R. I think thats what will happen here.

I'd like to see the comments post motorhow release...i bet handsdown they will change.

As long as they get rid of the crazy torque steer and distribute the power better i.e. rear wheel or 4wd...then its a goer...although i'm sure without this it'll still do well.

Just hope they dont sanitise it too much.

I'm looking forward to the new R, but will be inclined to go for a top spec DC5 when it comes to changing
