Nissan plans meaty 2+2

Coupé-like Foria aimed at Mazda RX-8

There's a new, more driver-focused Nissan on the way. Displayed at the recent Tokyo Show, the Japanese company is developing a new compact front-engined, rear wheel drive platform with a range of powerful engines to create what it called a more driver-focused series of cars, to be sold in the world market including the UK and Europe.

Based on this new layout, the Foria is a compact,  2+2 coupe designed to appeal to both women and men.

The company said that it "intends to imbue this concept with the kind of timeless elegance to be found in Nissans from the 60's, especially the 1965 Silvia csp 311 while still creating a new, powerful and forward looking design."

Blurb aside, we don't know much about the Foria's engine or other details, such as when it'll arrive, other than that the motor will be mid-sized -- most likely the V6 powerplant from the 350Z -- and that it could well have some form of all-wheel steering, according to some rumours rom Nissan.

Autoblog (link below) reckoned that: "the interior is a mixture of saddle-like leather and metallic trim pieces that creates an old-world-meets-new-technology kind of feeling". We do know that it'll be a 2+2 and have a pair of small suicide doors -- check the Mazda RX-8.

If Nissan can make another car as good as the 350Z, then the Foria will be worth checking out.

The back end is nice but the front is pretty lame. How about a proper Silvia replacement smallish, light RWD platform with a four cylinder turbo. Surely they'd make a killing with the current increasing popularity of drifting and lack of any real rivals.

I think it looks pretty swish. A silvia replacement would be dapper, but it seems this is the way we are heading.

These pics don't look that good

Press Release

"The Foria is packaged as a compact 2+2 coupe. The front-engine, rear-drive layout allows an exceptionally short front overhang, long hood and compact cabin. These styling features, together with the neatly-styled rear and 18-inch wheels positioned at the four corners, result in a car that is not only pleasing to look at but also delivers driving pleasure. Powered by a mid-sized engine and paddle-shift automatic transmission, the powertrain promises agile driving in town, as well as fully engaging performance when traveling on more open roads. Four-wheel Active Steer gives reassuring precision and steering feel at all driving speeds."

I find that strangely attractive, but think it might be improved by a change of colour - any photoshop experts care to change it to black and/or silver:

I like it. I can see how they have gone from 200sx to that. Longish bonnet, coupe, 2+2, rwd, etc.. I think it looks alright. Hopefully it will be as gigglesome as the 200!

Don't look that good? I thought the first pic was lovely. Exactly the type of photo I like: sunset sky reflecting on body goodness. IMO anyway.

Looks rather like it's aimed at the american market. Still, if they make a V6 2+2 for RX8 money that'd be great but I can see it costing 350Z money instead.

Do you think it would be overpriced at 350z money? I think it looks a little more sedate, and disscerning than the 350z... More aimed at luxury, than sportscar.

The concept's great on paper, I've got a 200SX so it should appeal directly, but I think it's butt-ugly and wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Let's see, Chrysler front, Alfa rear end and name, Range Rover vents and alloy accents and BMW looking wheels with a Renault engine ( some say not )I'll pass. I am just showing my age, but this way behind the 240Z in looks. I am sick of seeing good names like the Z cars, RX and Celica get get softer in their new generations. The ultimate insult is the rumors of a front engine NSX or even worse a Hybrid, bring the V8 or V10 if they must ( bad harmonics ) but not a battery car!

Agreed, I nearly like it, to look at anyway, tho it looks like it could have been designed by Audi to me. Bet it will be a good drive tho.
