2006 civic.... whos interested?
Discussion
New to japchat........
Ok, so its not quite the same excitement as pre-ordering an Aston or the like, but as the thread title says... anyone got their name down/registered interest for a 2006 Civic?
Had a look see at the official uk page with the prices (no option prices anounced yet?) and requested the brochure/info pack. Just wondered what the interest was here.
Currently own a smart Roadster (cracking car despite what certain members of the press say) but want something a little bigger and was looking at the DC5. However, what with the current fuel prices and insurance seeming to cost more each year no matter how much you shop around now looking at a cheaper to insure saloon or hatch.
New 06 Civic looks pretty good to my mind (The dash is awesome). No doubt a cracking engine (muted to have 1.5 economy with 2.0 performance, plus its pretty sure gonna be indestructable), styling is very good IMHO, prices not too bad, insurance groups not too bad, Honda customer service levels, so ticking some good boxes so far...
Ok, I know someone is gonna say "wait for the type R" and yep, would love to. But that will return us to the Insurance/economy/initial price question.
Anyone else got an opinion on this car, good or bad?

Thats why I asked for "an opinion" "good or bad"?
It is possible to form opinions on things after reading the press bumph and seeing the pictures etc...... Look at the endless speculation on things like the AM Vantage. All started well before the prices/official pictures were even seen.
Yet there is prices and (very detailed)pictures of the new civic readily available hence I "assumed" that there might be some people here in jap chat who had maybe formed an opinion already? Afterall, how many Honda owners on here who might be interested in Honda's new products?
but seeing as I put the original post up this morning and the only reply so far (this afternoon) has been to critic my questions might as well forget I asked....

No real observations on the new Civic, but if you're concerned about insurance costs and fuel economy why are you considering a new car? Depreciation will probably be the largest component of the overall cost should you sell it.
Bugger, just done a few calcs on my 3 year ownership of a CTR and almost proved myself wrong ish. Depreciation ~£5k, insurance ~£3.5k, petrol ~£4.7k Depreciation only just takes it, and that's ignoring tyres, pads, discs, servicing (~£500).
Sod it, just wait for the Type-R. Can't put a price on happiness

Thanks for the reply, Not really that concerned about fuel costs as anything I buy will be worse than the average 48mpg I'm getting now (can jump to over 50mpg if I have a "driving miss Daisey" week
As far as insurance goes this is of interest and the DC5 (or indeed the DC2, current CTR) is pretty high in this respect.
As far as depreciation goes? Well, suffered that on the Roadster already thanks to smart's inability to design a convertable that doesnt leak, hence killing the resale value quite early on. Couple that with the shockingly poor customer services (MB levels), even more shocking service prices (every 7k, £180minor, £350+ major) then the smiles/miles factor does dim a little. Although saying that I dont think I have driven a more fun car on a sunny day, hell, even in the wet its great fun and I commute in it every day on busy motorways and its perfectly comfortable.
So done the depreciation bit once, but i really dont want to buy a second hand unless its something pretty special and hard to source (DC5 for example). If I am buying "more normal" then I might as well buy new as I tend to keep my cars for 3 years at the least. So in that time a Civic will/should have taken the main hit and looking around now the prices tend to stabilise quite quickly on 3 year old Hondas if well specc'ed (Sure someone will correct me if required). And going by your own calculation I should be ok
Would love to see what Honda are gonna do with the Type R version of the new car, but rumour is it could end up being over £20k so a bit out of my price range to be perfect honest.
As I say the main reason for my question was to see what the general Japchatter's thought of the new car (if anything). My Father is on his second honda (New Accord CDTi Ex) and the customer service is amazingly good, and the servicing isn't too badly priced either.
So any other Honda owners opinion on Honda ownership itself would be apprieciated as well?

Exactly what I think when people ask why I spent so much money on the Smart Roadster. You wouldn't believe how good it feels to follow far faster "sports" cars down windy roads and seeing the looks they give you in thier rear view mirrors when you are still behind them at the end of the road. Things like hot hatches are not even a challenge.
And if you enter the road in front of said sports car.... well, I've not been overtaken yet when I am "pressing on", and that includes being followed by cars twice the price. The Mechanical grip levels are superb (if anything its actually over tyred) and the adjustability on the limit is so easy. Of course, this is with the nanny state... sorry... ESP turned off.
but back to Honda.....

I'd rather have a DC5 over 'just another' hatchback...
Exactly the reason I'm asking for "pre" opinions on the 06 Civic.
DC5 is an awesome car. Even my car illiterate girlfriend** saw one and asked what it was. That being said, the 06 civic looks different enough to not be "just another" hatchback IMHO
**Bless her, she judges which cars on a very simple criteria:- Is it blue? Is it pretty?. She saw the DC5 in white and liked it. Havent showed her a blue one yet as it might end up sealing the decision for me .
Funnily enough, I saw a new 06 Civic on the road this morning. Driving in the opposite direction, I immediately noticed the headlight/clear grille section, but apart from that it didn't really stand out from the other traffic.
Like you say Honda customer service is generally excellent. They're willing to work on imported cars, and will even sell you manufacturers warranty if you have the correct paperwork. I was considering a DC5 a while ago, but the additional insurance costs and the fact that I wouldn't gain a huge amount over the CTR put me off the idea in the end.
