Usually JDM grey imports come with a 112mph speed restrictor.

These are usually easy enough to bypass...

Could they be referring to emission restrictions? The japs are a lot less stringent, so they can evolve more power than a UK spec car on the same engine...

JDM cars have speed limited at 180km/h
They tend to make more power mainly because of the higher quality of petrol that is commonly available in Japan, so they can be tuned to run with a more agressive state of tune. Also JDM cars are only expected to last about 3 years or so before being replaced. Many aren't even serviced in this time (hence why Japanese cars tend to be a little overengineered)

European market cars are expected to last longer and run on poorer quality fuel. They are expected to be serviced more often though.

American cars are expected to last a long time with little or no service intervals and on a poor quality of fuel. Hence many American market cars have larger but apparently less powerful motors in their 'small' cars.

So trivia aside your JDM engine is not 'unrestricted' really, it probably just makes a bit more power if you run it on a high octane fuel. They may have a slightly higher RPM limit as well. Otherwise it's just people repeating something they heard from a friend of a friend who got the facts wrong from someone who misheard in the first place. Very common when talking about cars, particularly the grey world of imports.
