Me and Fatboy were having a discussion this morning about which car has the best engine note. We disagreed from the outset, so didn't get onto whether it was at tickover or full chat.

But overall, what do you guys think has the best engine note??

Very bias but a single Supra is hard to beat. I also remember Ronnie's Skyline sounded lovely at full chat.

Does it have to be Jap?

My STi RA with H&S full system sounds quite good. Especially approaching 8krpm

But I think the Griffith sounds slightly better.

as we're in Jap chat, I'll stick to Jap stuff:

22B, custom de-catted stainless exhaust, huge diameter pipes, think it had an HKS manifold but could be wrong. It howled.

The winner, however, is the NSX Type-R, at full scream. Smooth, but also SO raw.

I may be a goit, but the above would show that the majority (of the replies so far) believe the Impreza has the best engine note.

So I'm a correct goit.

Ask the NEPH Lads, but my Skyline didn't sound to bad at the NEPH Meet on Wednesday night.

Sounds best in full flow though, with the screamer pipe... well screaming!

Honda NSX every time for me.

I've got a sound recording of one doing 0-220kph. I play it when I'm feeling depressed.

Depends on the exhaust. I love the standard 355 noise, but there's one with a 'sports' exhaust goes past my office every week. Sounds AWFUL.

I'll have to try and get that NSX file off my computer this weekend. The only problems are;

* No home email
* Computer is stone dead

But fear not. I have a plan.

If we're talking strictly Jap stuff here, I would be tempted to say the Vtecs...

It's a hard question to quantify though, a well sorted Vtec at full chat sounds manic & brilliant, equally though, I love the burble from a properly tweeked Scoob flat four....

Generally speaking, VTEC for on cam, and a ported rotary on idle, and a big Nissan with induction coming off boost, even with the standard recircs...

...but the best engine sound I have EVER heard is the GT2 Porsches changing down through three gears into Arnage during Le Mans, specially after dusk when the spooky audio effects temperature inversion has got going.

Or maybe the sound of a four-rotor warming up, but that's too loud to enjoy properly!

road car wise, the new zonda F does a pretty good job of cloning a mix between an F1 car and a screaming LM racer....... BUT turn back the clock 50 odd years and listen to the BRM V16 anyone that was at the shelsley walsh 100th anniversary must have loved that, engine and supercharger both screaming
