Fellow Jap Fiends, please provide me with some clarification and, ideally, tell me what I want to hear

What exactly is the deal with decats and MOTs? Firstly, am I correct in that only post 1993 cars need a cat?

And also I was told by someone "in the know" that Jap Imports up to 1995 are exempt?

Would it be wise to post up a "How to bribe MOT testers" thread?

As far as I know...

Regardless of year, if it had one, it must be working. Imports and all.

That said if you don't have one and still get good enough CO figures I've found most places still tick the box.

And run them on 4-star as well, apparently.

Hi,

I might be mistaken but it use to be all cars after 1993 had to have a cat.

If there was no equivalent UK model/ variant such as the MR2 Turbo, then they required a cat from around 1995/96 onwards.

A Pre-95 MRT won't need a cat.

Mine failed so badly that it went off the scale.

Had to refit the cat.

Lads will it no invalidate your insurance if the car was supposed to have them?

Incidentally I have been bending over and getting some ins quotes too.

The only company who queried it, said that as long as it has a valid MOT its fine.

So if someone got an MOT. Then replaced the cats with test pipes. Had in writing from the insurance company that test pipes are OK. Should they be in a crash and total how can we be sure that the Insurance wont try to avoid paying them by having the car fail an MOT test?

I always thought it was June 1992 > cars that needed cats.

My GT4 was a Jan 92, and I had it decatted 2 weeks before MOT time, didn't even think about it til afterwards, passed no worries.

Although mine wasn't an exact "de-cat" more of an original cat with the innards bashed out with the handle of a hammer!!!

Is that what you wanted to hear??

edited to say, the bonus of "de-catting" the original is that to an inspector (or anyone else for that matter), it looks standard. Not that I would condone anything of that nature.

Cheers Batty thats just what I was after - although where is the database?

Sir Turbo of Tastic, yeah, I originally was decatted that way, but the replacement downpipe creates a much smoother air flow, resulting in quicker spool up and a few more GGs!

MOTUK have a database of all cars in the uk with the CAT emissions they should meet...
Course the FTO being a 'grey import' and not offcially sold in the UK (well the pre-facelift anyway) doesn't have a CAT emission test
so no cat

Ahh, I see. I always fancied getting a proper one on the 'Four, would have been nice to see the difference. I have heard people talking about using a dremel to smooth off the inside of the stock cat, but quite how long that would take I dont know.

I also always wanted one of these to go with the downpipie.

Nice manifold.

My insurance company are well aware the car has a downpipe. They're also aware that the cat goes back in for a MOT.
