I'd go for a supra personally... But out of those 2, I'd say Evo... It looks better, and is a lot more 'hardened' on the road. You'd have to drive both to see what I mean, but the scooby is a great car, but the EVO is another step above. Its a bit of an arse in traffic, etc, as I found the clutch to be a bit hard, but when you are in hoon mode, its perfect!
The Evo's probably a better car for getting from A to B, but I couldn't put up with one as a daily car for the reasons already given, the additional NVH to a Scoob and the slight problem that an Evo may begin to get boring.
Seriously - a friend swapped his Scoob for a well modded Evo 5 and now finds it "too competent" and its getting to the point of not being fun unless laws are being broken.
The Evo 5 (preferably 6) and later models are the ones to go for I think. I'm no expert, but I've been told this by my Evo owning friends.
Turning to the Scoob now... I'm on my second, and this one is so much better than the first (but then it did cost more...) It sometimes gets in the too competent and dull state like the Evo, but I can forgive it that since it's got a bit more character.
I went through a similar set of questions before I bought my second Scoob. My budget was much the same as yours. I could have bought (for around £2.5k more than I had) a perfectly standard Evo 6 with moderate milage, or (for slightly less than my budget) a special edition Scoob (STi RA WRC limited edn) with a decent set of mods - big brakes, coilovers and 350 bhp engine mod package. Now that was a difficult choice.
Running costs of an Evo are apparently quite high - eg. the AYC needs careful servicing and has a short interval. Modded Scoobs aren't exactly cheap to run either, but aren't as bad as Evos unless you lose an engine or something.
You could always be sensible and buy British... You can get some good TVRs for £10k

I don't believe it....
I only asked about EVO vs IMPREZA because Ive had alot of people telling me my plans to buy a Griff are dodgy.
For example - "it will break" / "you will crash it" / "why don't you get an EVO or a SOOBY they are faster in the real world..." / "Jap cars won't break"
...and what happens ???
...even on the Jap forum the posting ends up talking about Griffs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fate ?
It must be my destiny to own a loud and un sensible TVR!

Good effort with the cars DNB !!
I was thinking of getting a similar pairing witht he wagon version of the Impreza to accomodate doggies but I ended up going for a dirty big 4X4...
(fun in the mud though)
I take it you insure your two seperately to keep the premiums down... I was thinking of insuring one of mine via my other half but group 20 quotes with no NCB (she had her licence removed for medical reasons) were a bit scary.....
How do you find the Griff for general use ?

Yes - 2 policies as they're both group 20...
A-plan split the NCB for me across the 2 policies so that they're separate, which was awfully good of them. The Griff is my other half's first car - she's used mine or her parents cars beforehand, so she had no NCB of her own. (The Griff is cheaper than the RA to insure BTW)
Griff is fine for general use (for both of us). We got one with PAS so that it's easier to park, but it doesn't make a lot of difference! We do prefer the shorter steering rack from having PAS - it's the same ratio as the RA's quick rack. The Griff isn't as good as bumps in the road as the Impreza, so you do have to go a bit more carefully over B roads... Reliability (touch wood) has also been very good.

I had a Griff 500 and am currently looking for an R32 GTR skyline.
You can get a pre-cat Griff for 10k and a very very good R32GTR for that money too, with stage 1 mods already done usually.
PLEASE dont buy into the cheap urban myth stereotype of TVR's unless you have had PERSONAL experience. Mine never once broke or let me down and was the most fantastic drive I have ever had to date. Yes there are dogs out there but that applies to ANY 2nd hand car regardless of manufacturer as its how they are looked after that counts.
Having said that the Japs will be cheaper to run I imagine and the daily use of a Griff in our climate makes it impractical really. Personally I think the scooby/Evo's are too common and "ordinary" for my taste but they are undoubtedly capable machines.
My advice, and this really works ....
Choose the type of car you want with your heart, buy the actual car with your head.

£10k to spend.....
Evo / Impreza ...?
Have you ever considered a Skyline??
If I had £10k to spend, its what I'd go for. (leaving a fair whack for insurance )
But if it were only a choice of Evo or Impreza as a daily driver I would choose the Impreza.
Better sound, better looks, and only really a marginal difference in performance/handling on the road. IMO.
i have to say 10k would get you a lot of supra!! In a toss up strictly between scoobys and evos, i would go scooby, cos i the people i know who have had an evo are bloody alarmed by the costs of keeping it on the road. You could argue that scooby are too common, however, thats good in a way that there are cheap parts and goodies everywhere.
R6RY D said:Evo has much more exclusivity. Don't underestimate the running costs, though. They need a service every 4500 miles and a set of rubber doesn't last much longer. Fortunately one of the recommended tyres happens to be relatively cheap (£380 a set, fitted)

20mpg is about all you'll get in average running - much less if you really push on. This is comparable with the Scooby.
Basically, an old Evo costs at least as much to run as a new one. More, when you factor in the potential for worn components.
If you go in with your eyes open then they are great!
A friend (with a well modified Evo 5) and I did some comparison tests last night... All in the interests of research
There's so little to choose between our 2 cars!
They accelerate about the same, they brake about the same, the top speed is similar (the Evo has about 10 mph through longer gearing), the fuel economy is about the same... The Scoob has been cheaper on maintainance so far, but there's so many of them kicking around.
My Scoob was slightly more comfortable on the road and sounded nicer, but the Evo felt more like a rally car. (I suppose having the anti-lag switched on helped here )
His car is a weekend/evening toy and mine is a daily driver. Neither of us would swap cars with each other for anything longer than a couple of days.
