Charged the battery up over the last couple days and put it back in the MR2 this morning to see what happened.

As expected, not much happened, which might be a good thing as at least there wasn't any smoke or anything like that. There were no strange noises either (rattles etc), just the constant whine of the starter motor trying to fire up.

So could it be that the problem is just the cam belt? Haven't had time to get the casing off (assuming it's that easy) so I'm just being optimistic...

If it is, what are the odds on additional engine damage like valves being damaged/destroyed etc?

Did you check all the fluid levels?

You said there was smoke when it died - odd that there isn't any now...

Could be a stuck starter solenoid?

My thoughts exactly.

And there was lots of smoke!
