Nissan plans new Skyline

Bonkers car to provide 'ultimate pleasure'

Skyline in action
Skyline in action
We hear that Nissan is about to unveil the new Skyline to replace the defunct R34 Skyline GTR.

It'll debut in production form at the Tokyo show in two years' time, although a UK version will have to wait until 2008. It'll be based on the 350Z platform and be known simply as the Nissan GTR.

You won't recognise it though. According to this week's Autocar magazine's sketches, it won't resemble the previous Skyline's boxy saloon-like profile, but will look shark-like, with a drooping, aggressive front nose with dark, slashed headlamp assemblies. At the rear, the trademark quad taillights will remain.

Performance is likely to be adequate. Spies have already seen mules pounding round the 'Ring with creditable lap times of eight minutes 15 seconds. Autocar's spy said that it uses a turbocharged 400bhp V6 and four-wheel drive, possibly with active rear steering. The aim, according to Nissan, is to provide the 'ultimate driving pleasure'.

Amen to that.

If they stick closely to this concept they mocked up a couple of years back then I reckon they'd be onto a winner.

On near-slick tyres with selected suspension 'tweaks' and a bit of a diet, if the conspiracy buffs are accurate...

That concept has dated very quickly in my opinion - the old one (r34) still looks current and has tonnes of presense, especially in GTR form and in blue.

Eh? It's very very similar. The headlamps run into the air intakes the grille's similar, the angular front wheel arch, the wheels, the colour used in the sketch, the sill section, the waistline over the rear arch, the bonnet arcitecture.......

The list goes on.

The tyres were road legal, the 4wd and 4ws software had been 'improved', suspension tweaks, and lost more boost - in fact.
I saw the new car (with a dummy shell) testing at the Ring recently.

Well the Skyline is already on sale in Japan - http://www2.nissan.co.jp/SKYLINE/V35/0411/EXTER/main1.html

One would assume that the Skyline GTR will share some visual cues, no? Which the above rendering does...

Also interesting that this suggests a move to a V instead of inline. I may be completely wide of the mark, but it was my belief that inline 6s are more naturally balanced than V6s. Could this change limit the tuning potential of the new motor?

Surely they have lost the plot a little bit.

The Skyline GT-R was the pinnicle of the Skyline range. It was based on a car that could be bought as a 2 door or 4 door, standard rwd, and as a car that could be a base model 2 ltr, or the bonkers 2.6 twin turbo, 4wd GT-R. They are now saying that the car is just a GT-R, no lower models, not based on anything? That would be losing the whole point of the Skyline and the history with which it was born. Half of the attraction for me was that fact that it was a half ordinary car with amazing performance.

Why are all these manufacturers moving this way? Subaru seem to be doing the same with the new Impreza, as does Mitsubishi with the new Evo. These cars evloved into performance rally cars which gained them their heritage and image, something the manufacturers seem to have forgotten.

So is there any new news here? I'm pretty sure all of this info has been well known for quite a while now, or is this just the official confirmation?

Top Secret couldn't wait and have already made their own new 'GTR' by sticking a Twin Turbo V8 and 4WD into one of the new skylines.

We couldn't wait...it's been 3 years since the last GT-R and it was time that the Skyline reclaimed it's place among cars. Top Secret has now decided to create a GT-R from the G35 to satisfy Nissan fans cravings for a new Monster Skyline.

The G35 platform was good enough for Smoky but apparently the displacement wasn't. Option was suprised to hear that the engine was coming from a very unsuspecting doner car...the Nissan Cima! A VK45 NA 4.5L V8 Engine was chosen as a good base to start with. The engine produces 280ps in stock form and the plans are to go to 800ps with forced induction and alot of Top Secret's specialty tuning.

Construction of this amazing vehicle requires alot of preparation and note-taking. Top Secret is famous for their amazing engine swaping and engineering skills. The high powered vehicle is intended to be created with a 4WD system to deliver the power effectively as well as the world's first wide body kit for the G35.

There was this concept drawing, looks like a slight evolution of that earlier concept

Hmmm.... leaves me a bit non-plussed.
Always thought a V8 would have suited. I read a Jap article recently that claimed a V6 & V8 version may be available.Speculation will be rife by 2008.

Also poached these:
Taken from Best Car magazine.

The front looks similar to the new Nissan Fuga and Infiniti M35/45.

The rear seems to be taking cues from the CPV35.

The revised FM platform, which will likely be the basis for the upcoming GT-R.
www.ksgarage.jp/Misc/1platform.jpg

The new top level engine, a VQ41DE with 330ps or ~325hp. Could a turbocharged version of this be used in the GT-R? The VQ25De and VQ35DE will probably continue to be used.

A comparison of the V36's engine with the next generation Altezza's new V6.

According to the end of this blurb from Skylines Australia, expect a sporting coupe version to slot in under the GT-R.

They're taking far too long over this, the last GTR rolled out of the factory in '02 IIRC, 3 years and they've only just decided to make a new one. Bloody corporate tw@ts! Just make the damn car already!

That's also looks like the Infinity or something over here in the US. or could be same base model.
Also been told the inline 6 was very expensive to produce, and went with the cheaper V6 Renault engine.

For the record they didn't have room for both the TT V8 and the AWD system and ended up using the RWD from a Supra.

By RWD I'm guessing you mean the Getrag six speed. It's listed that way on the Top Secret site and in various magazines. Excellent gearbox, save for the strange pull-up-then-move motion to engage reverse. I swear, next to the Supra, GT-R is my absolute all-time fave Japanese car. Especially the R32. Funny seeing Jim Richards dominate at Bathurst, and then getting banned because they were too good for the crap domestic cars (i saw it on a dvd, i was too young to see it when it happened). But 400hp? Come on! Let the US have the 400hp VK45 version for their crap fuel, and give the rest of the world a 450-500hp VQ30/32DETT!!! Please???!!!

Edited for spelling
