just going through the likes of TopMarques as I do every now and then, to see what's about... and there are a few examples of what I'd call "A lot of car for not a lot"..

most obvious are R33 GTR's, of which there's loads for ~£15k

Supra TT's also seem REALLY cheap for what they are..

and on another tangent, 964 series 911 Carrera's for ~£15k

all very tempting.. but all mega-bucks to keep on the road??

I have been considering an S15 SpecR for a while, and while they're great, they're also nearly at the same price of the cars above... which makes you wonder if it's really worth going for the newer/fresher/lower mileage/cheaper to run/cheaper to insure type car?

I'd have a 964 out of that lot if I could.

But S15s are pretty bloomin' fast too. And very rare. Probably a nightmare to insure! Probably not quite as quick as the six cylinder vehicles once things really get moving though.

price of fuel at our local has actually just gone down 4p/litre!! yepeeee (well sort of, anyway)

The S15 ticks the boxes for me, as it's a good car for the boring stuff... reliable, comfy, decent boot, 4 seats(just), dry, reasonably economical if you're easy on the loud pedal.... and yet it'd be easy to get 300bhp/300lb.ft, some whiteline ARB's, brakes from the 350Z, and have a great fun car for the interesting bits (trips to the 'ring etc)

It's just not quite as 'special' as a 911/GTR etc etc...

yeah.. but it's knowing what is too good to be true...

a while ago a manual turbo with less than starship mileage would have seemed way to good to be true at £15k, but there seem to be loads like that now....

what's the deal with the late-model ones? are they un-SVA'able or something stupid like that?

Much, much rarer though. My very petrolhead/knowledgeable mate was very excited when he saw an S15 Spec-R a few months ago. IMHO they look gorgeous with a decent set of wheels on them. I'm sure a Skyline engine can be squeezed under there as well...

I think a skyline engine fits into an S14 as well. Same mounting points, (I think).

The yank version might be a bit different though...

The RB series which is the Skyline straight-six will fit however its a case of changing engine mounts and potentially sliding the gearbox backwards as well- you start running out of room for nice things like air con as well. You're better off tuning the existing SR20DET engine. 350-400HP isn't too hard to see and you probably wouldn't need any drastic fuel system upgrades either. Even a decent front-mount intercooler, exhaust and air filter will net good gains on a standard S15 (say 210kW as opposed to factory 185 with plenty more torque).

Lots of car for no money.

Celica ST205 GT-4. I've seen tidy cars go for as little as 4500 quid, and I know of a 17000 mile minter that's not selling for 7K.....

Depressingly cheap.

Unsuprisingly I'll add the FD to the 'a lot for a little' pile. Late model (>'96) can be had for under 13k. An older but well looked after car for 8k. 10k will see you driving something with 400+ ponies.

MR2 turbo's are good bang for buck and pretty cheap to get some more poke out of them! easy to get the 0-60mph well under 6 secs with a few mods and a 1/4 in under 13

i know a standard really clean car for sale too

They are well under 6 seconds standard! Bit of modding and you can get it under 5 seconds... I had mine tested with one of those GPS thingies, and was 5 seconds dead when I tested it out. Was only running about 300bhp. Bit of WI, better turbo, and a nice big fat clutch, I'm sure you could get under 5...

yeah.. they are good cars, and an obvious choice for "what car under £10k" type questions... but I just hate the interior... looks like any other old mans corolla or whatever... it's the one thing on the car that really ages it, which is a shame as otherwise, they're pretty damn good (with the exception of the chavs that seem to be buying them by the dozen now..)

Adding to what Gaz said, On the Late Supras its simply an SVA thing. There are cars in the Country that have been imported but cant get through the SVA as there is no Model report for the VVTi. The already registered Manual VVTi is extrememly rare in the UK and will hold its money by far the best if you can find a good one. There are many more tiptronic VVTi Supras and the second hand market reflects this. The Manual VVti are the #1 sought after Supra in Japan.

it's the shape of the dash.. it's just a massive un-contoured swathe of plastic with no features....

Just IMO obviously.. didn't want to get everybody's backs up....

re supras, if you swapped over to an older non-vvti head, for the SVA, would it go through then? or is it specifically realted to the year?
