I'm tyring to see if my bro's MR2 has any fault codes and have done the paperclip test, but that just causes the check engine light to blink continually. If the car has any fault codes stored, will the check engine light be illuminated when then engine's running because it doesn't come on at all currently (except when you first turn the ignition on to confirm all the warning lights work).

Constant blinking is no codes mate.

Sounds like she's healthy.

Excellent After spending the past weekends swaping the engine over I'm amazed it all seems to work, especially as I had to swap the engine looms over because the new engine's loom had different connectors on it.

cheers It was either sell it for scrap or spend £500 on a new engine and swap them over. As the car's in such good nick, it seemed a shame to scrap it so we went for the engine swap.

Only problem that's cropped up since finishing was the exhaust blowing at the collector because I'd not realised there were 2 gaskets to go in there. I'd used the new downpipes that came with the new engine which didn't have any there. Half an hour to remove middle section and fit them and it's job done.

He's just driven it 100 odd miles down to Plymouth and all is well

If you lived closer I'd be happy to help

What happened to yours? Big ends? I must admit, there seems to be quite a few MR2 with blown engines. Perhaps an opportunity to buy, fix and sell

Yup.

Either that or cam belt.

To be honest I can't be arsed to find out!

Just reading your profile and had to laugh at this comment:

Very good build quality and bullet-proof engine.

If it's the cambelt I *think* the engine is non-interference so should just require a new belt to get it going
