Mk2 MR2 coolant

Anyone know what coolant you should use in an NA MR2 Mk2? I gather it needs 14lt of the stuff :eek:

I think you just opened a can of worms

Some say only use coolant from the dealer you you'l die a slow, horrible death. Other people, including me, use normal stuff with no problems.

It's bleeding it that's the bitch... there's three bleed points to be done in sequence, google should turn up about three million hits in that department.

Think it's ok as long as it's glycerol based.

Got the proper 4Life in mine though. £38 to have that done. Not bad really...

Was that £38 for just the coolant or for both coolant and for the garage to change it?

£38 quid should cover the coolant, then labour on top. Or, like me, you can get thoroughly p*ssed off doing it yourself.

BTW it shouldn't take more than 10 litres (2 5ltr cans).

Well as I've just removed the old engine (big ends went) and have installed a new one, I'm sure I can figure out bleeding the coolant system

I'll see what's cheaper, Toyota stuff or glycerol based, and if there's only a few quid difference will stick to the Toyota stuff.

£38 was for a garage to do it. Included coolant and VAT. That was somewhere near Horsham (I've got a receipt for it from just before I bought my car).

Toyota actually recommend "A good Glycerol based coolant, such as Toyota 4life"

Not using 4life sholdnt be a massive issue, but if you are selling, it might put potential buyers off not seeing the red stuff.

The Glycerol or ethylene glycol content (added to most modern coolants) helps to protect the especially fragile aluminium componants.

A couple of tubs of good brand-name coolant will do you fine. They all say what they are suitable for on the back of the tub (Costco are good for price).

I've never found bleeding the MR2 a problem. Just make sure you know where all the bleed valves are (not difficult to find).

As the other have mentioned glycerol based coolant is the one to go for. Even Halfords stock a pretty good brand of the stuff, but for what you pay for it, you may as well buy the 4life stuff from MrT.

Stay well away from alcohol based coolant! You will never get rid of all the original stuff 9unless you do a couple of good flushes. When alcohol and glycerol based coolant mixes it turns to jelly - not good.

Went for the Toyota stuff in the end. £15+VAT per 5lt bottle though Brought 3 of them but have only used 2 so will take the other one back. Why the workshop manual thinks you can get 14lts in I don't know as it was fully drained
