Engine remap for an NA MR2 Mk II....any good?
Discussion
I've heard from people on here, whose knowledge I very much respect, that chipping/mapping an N/A car is "a bit pointless".
I don't know enough about it myself to offer a detailed explanation.
From what I understand, all you can really do is make it run richer or more lean at various revs, which is not terrbily useful.
I'd have thought it would improve the driveability though, e.g. if you have flatspots.

I had my Rev3 UK N/A for two weeks before putting it on rollers for a "health check" and starting point. It was needing a decent service, being run on regular unleaded and was completely stock. I got a reading of 171.5bhp (stock is 173bhp). Not bad I thought.
The plan was to put it on rollers after every mod to closely monitor gains or losses and document them all.
So it went back on the rollers 3 months later after a full service, being run on optimax and nothing else and a few days before it got a little gift of a K&N induction kit. Same rollers gave a print out of 183.5bhp, but I was down on a little torque higher up the rev range.
Unfortunately I had to sell the car and couldn't continue the project.
IMO, fitting an aftermarket ECU (or chip) and going for a full remap may be a little pointles unless you have had other serious work done to the engine (not just bolt-on gadgets). All this would probably cost more than going for a turbo in the first place.

Cost a whole lot more than just buying another turbo though. Have the 1500 quid engine, plus the cost to fit it.
Fensport quote £1500 for a turbo engine and can arrange fitting for £800. And as mentioned by another poster I'd like to keep this car as I've had it for a while and feel like I know it.
Although as someone else said at 175ish bhp he's not exactly slow
