At the minute, the wedgepilot household is running two, big 6-cylinder cars, so I'm toying with the idea of swapping the Passat for a warm-ish hatch.

Now, I came across this on one of the import sites:
http://www.autosupply.co.nz/vehicle.php3?id=IBCID134000

What do you think? Anyone know anything about them? Google didn't turn anything up. Usually a bonnet scoop on a JDM car means turbo, doesn't it?

Toyota Starlet isn't it?

They're a Turbo, I've had frequent dealings with one in Lincolnshire. Not amazingly quick but certainly faster than my Honda-engined 1.6 Rover.

I'm not after anything ultra-fast, just nippy around town. And there's always the tuning option

Do you know anything else about them Al? BHP, torque, do they have an intercooler, is the handling any good, etc?

Definately nippy, but I'm afraid I know nothing about their mechanicals.

The lad who owns the car I referred to works in the local Halfords. He can't drive it worth tuppence but you can tell it's quick in spite of his lack of skill.

For relative measures, my Rover can easily out-gun my friends' 3 litre auto Supra (old style) his Cavalier SRI his Nissan Silvia and can just about out pull a MK4 golf GTI Turbo.

The Starlet GT is visibly faster than mine.

There's a typo in the original page - it should be "Glanza", not "Granza" ;-)

Not sure if they're the same car as the photos on this site are pretty poor.

I had one of the older models, mine was damn fast (but I then sold it to a mate who had it RR'd at 200bhp so that may account for a lot) Traffic light GP with a lotus elise once in it and he kept up, overtook once we got to about 80mph.

Great thing about these is they have an adjustable boost button on the dash simply labelled hi/lo, the previous owner thought it had something to do with the aircon until he pressed it for the first time "ooh!" think the standard low setting is about 110bhp and the high raises the boost so it runs at about 130bhp

They're really light and i'd imagine would be great as a second car, stock 0-60 time is 6.8 seconds, cheap tax...

Fensport carry all the parts you'd need for one too.

Starleeeeeet!

These things are great fun. Think Charade GT-Ti with a bit of build quality and your not far off.

Ickle tubby, air-air intercooler.

Mate ran one with a boost controller and was seeing 160+ bhp nice and reliably, and the thing would return 40mpg.

If I recall, they only weigh about 850kg, so even 130bhp will see you keeping up with most things short of a Clio 182/CTR.

I bet they're a hoot to drive...

These sound like a lot of fun. It's got to be worth getting one just to have a turbo boost button on the dash!
