90s Civic vti vs Subaru Impreza
Discussion
Hi guys
For those that have driven both of these cars(I Huess the ek4 and the gc8 Impreza turbo 2000/wrx use models, i just wanted to know how different is the experience
between the two?
I know the Subaru is faster but the civic is so much fan even at low speeds. I’m not asking which is faster or about maintenance etc but about fun and experience. As an example I drive the golf r32 2007 I think it’s fast but for me the civic is way more fun to drive. Is the Impreza like the golf or is it still very different experience perhaps more fun than vtec?
Also which takes turns better/is more fun atturns?
Thanks

The Civic is for jdm fanboys and kids. An impreza is a much better car in every way and a car that is appreciated by a broader audience.
The civic may be fun on track with a k20 engine in but other than that it's just a crappy old hatchback.
I would imagine those comments being widely scorned by EK9 owners. The civic may be fun on track with a k20 engine in but other than that it's just a crappy old hatchback.
OP...The only EK really worth considering is a fresh import, EK4 or the renowned (and expensive) EK9, the EK was probably the worst Honda
for corrosion, if you look at a UK spec one get right underneath it before parting with any cash.
Classic Impreza's are as rusty as any EK shape Civic and just as likely to have been ragged to death, more things to go wrong too. Both are good to drive though, quite similar in many ways (quite different in others).
I guess it depends whether your interested in 4WD and turbos or FWD and revs. Would personally choose the Impreza, but if I needed more of a daily i'd be quite happy with a VTi.
The Impreza much more likely to attract negative opinions in my experience. Probably best not to give a st what other people think though.

A long time ago i had a Civic 1.6 VT (EE9). It was a great car, and rare as hens teeth now.
It was like a go kart to drive, 150bhp in a crisp packet body.
I sold it for a Impreza Turbo Terzo with PPP (240 bhp).
The Subaru was a huge step up in size and performance, but saying that i'd love to have either back in my garage as part of a collection.

Are you saying the experience is still so good you you could make a case for one or the other and it’s not one is better than the other? It was like a go kart to drive, 150bhp in a crisp packet body.

Performance in terms of speed doesn’t mean much to me. Lots of modern cars are fast but they just don’t have the raw feel, fun factor etc. Having said that sounds like the Impreza delivers on both.
They were both two totally different experiences.
The Civic was on its game when you were thrashing it. Whereas the Impreza was all about the Turbo boost. The Impreza would feel like it was running out of puff about the same revs as when the Civic would be starting to do its thing.
Some folk are very polarised between the feeling of an old skool Turbo and a High revving N/A Vtec unit. Its one or the other. But for me i quite like the different feel, and that's why I'd happily have both again. There's no getting away from the fact the Impreza is the faster, bigger more practical car.
Its down to personal preference really
If I had the funds and space, id have the exact same spec Civic VT in a shot, as for the Impreza, I would go for a Jap import WRX STi over a UK Spec Turbo 2000, although I could make an allowance for a P1

Have you owned anything vtec before?
If not, I would get one before you can't anymore. I have had 6 vtec cars over the years, the reason I always end up in another is because I find vtec fun and addictive. As you say, it's not necessarily the fastest, but to me the most fun.
I currently own a GR Yaris, but I can't promise I won't pick up another old school vtec one day. An EK9 or DC5 maybe......

Many moons ago I had a B16A (SIR/VTI) swapped Milano red 1995 EG5 Civic. It was a fantastic car, sharing much of its underpinnings with the revered DC2. In fact, most DC2 parts bolt up easily to most EG hatch chassis'. The 1995 model I had was one of the last made, and was part of the slight refresh they did on the EG platform in (I think) late 1994.
The kind of machinery it could keep honest, it had no business doing so. I would own another in a heart beat. It's engagement level I don't think I've managed to better in recent years until my most recent Evo 6. The noise the B16A made once it hit 5500rpm was addictive, and it simply kept revving. I moved into a DC5 years later which was 90% as fun, just 100% more modern. The older B-series had a charm that was lost a little on the K-series.
There are not many EG's left in serviceable condition, be warned!

I've owned both back in late 2001.
The Civic VTI was a great car and I should have kept the car longer so that I could enjoy it, mod it properly and enjoy the high revving engine.
Instead I sold it about a year and half later and got a Prelude 2.2 on import which was a much better place to be. A coupe, cockpit style interior and the dash was pretty cool back then!
About 1 year or so later, I sold it again and was tempted by a 200SX S14a and it was about getting a turbo car, but after test driving an Impreza Turbo 2000 I was sold, the noise, the sportiness and feel, it felt much better to drive.
Did the usual with an exhaust which made it sound better. Eventually I started a job with a company car and sold the Impreza. 20 years later I regret selling each one of them and my eyes water when I see the prices of these cars!
All amazing cars to drive, own in their own way!

If you're genuinely serious about either car and not just talking bks after a few pints (i.e. me), I'd buy on condition regardless of whichever you choose.
They're different cars and you're considering both so ultimately it doesn't matter as long as you're happy, so find the best one you can. If you've got the money in your pocket, find the best car you can and buy it, regardless of whether it's a Subaru or a Honda.
