If it helps, I had a high-tax HR model and I found myself rarely winding it out all the way to the limiter. I also found myself skipping gears so 1-3-5 or 2-4-6 when not pressing on. The HR has a pretty broad powerband I thought.

So, based on experience of the HR, I wouldn't particularly worry about losing some 'headroom' with a DE, it seems like it would be fine just running to 6600. The other thing is the HR has longer conrods to make it rev smoother (this is why it can rev higher, also why it needs the bonnet bulge as it's taller). I guess if you can test-drive a DE, check you're happy with the engine character as it revs out. But I don't think the lower redline is going to be a major issue per se.

I think people do up the limiter slightly yes, you may find more specific info https://www.350z-uk.com/ . I'd probably speak to Horsham Developments.

I had a DE Z a couple of years ago. The rev limit is just right for this kind of engine, it never was or is a really rev happy unit. The last 4-500 rpm already felt a bit flat, it was the most happy between 4-6k. My brothers HR Z feels fairly similar character wise, it just adds another 900ish rpm on top.

I have a 370Z that revs to 7500rpm...but I echo what others have said, and it isn't an engine that feels like it really wants to be revved right out for me. 6600rpm is more than fine for the VQ engine I reckon.

The VQ engine feels quite reluctant right at the top of the revs, and it feels more happy at lower revs for me. It feels quite a torquey engine when you consider it is naturally aspirated I think.

Thanks for all your replies!

That’s relieving to hear, I’ve watched some DE acceleration videos in YouTube and it looks ok.

I might be tempted to increase it a touch to 6900 if safe as I plan on fitting a shorter final drive, it seems to really wake them up from what I’ve seen.

Well the bad news is that’s me 99% certain I’ll be grabbing a ‘Z’ very soon, they’re great value for money for what you get! And I fancy a soulful engine at any sped, which, with an uprated exhaust seems true of this car.

I have, and have only driven, a DE. I would echo what others have said, that the rev limit suits the engine and in normal driving you don't need to get near the redline. However, on track I have run into the limit a few times because power doesn't really tail off, so a few more revs wouldn't be a bad thing.

And I would definitely encourage you to get one, they are a great laugh and won't be getting any cheaper.
