Diesel Forester or Outback, favoured by the farmers? Depends what you need it for I guess.

I go down farm tracks and drive on the field margins and go to the local shops on roads, no motorways

You list a pretty wide range of possibilities, if it's just getting dogs into a field then pretty much anything with 4wd and some decent tyres will do the job, so just pick what you like the look of the most!

The better off road it is, the worse the road manners and fuel consumption will be as a rule, so as above poster suggests don't rule out a 4x4 estate car.

I've been looking at Shogun sports recently, they're cheaper than the pickups if you just keep a box on all of the time anyway. No centre locking diff like the normal shogun's unless you get an import though and they've got a lower towing capacity too.

I don't want to tow anything but have looked at both the Shogun sports, Landcruiser and double cab pick-ups, wow it's confusing but thanks for your input
