What exactly is a Celica?
Discussion
I was idly musing over this question today.
In the earlier 90's the MR2 covered the "Sports Car" in the Toyota range. The Celica GT4 had "Rally Slag" covered pretty well.
The 2.0 Celica seems too soft / slow / big (delete as applicable) to be considered a hot hatch, yet its a bit small to be a saloon, so what the hell is it?

What 2.0 Celica?
The ST202 SSIII got trick superstrut suspension and a 200bhp screaming N/A four pot.
The ST183 in 1991 had 160bhp and trick rear wheel steering.
As pointed out, the GT-Fours are pure rally slag.
The new ones? Sharp looking coupe that's crying out for some torque and anything but FWD.
The T-Sport/TRD versions are nimble and quick when in lift.
The 1ZZ powered car is aimed at middle aged women who want a reliable coupe IMHO.

An interesting titbit...
Toyota are killing the MR2 and Celica names in the very near future...
There is a plan for a single sports model (and it won't be called the Supra!) to fill the gap left by the two models..
There were some 'blacked out' shots of it floating about the N-ring a couple of months ago-think they were posted on here somewhere.
Yes, the celica and MR2 are dead.
SS2 will have a Jap spec 3S-GE lump, and is good for some 175ish bhp.
More details than you can shake a sports coupe at;

Check the generation forums for specs on the various models.

Out of interest, does anyone know any information and performance facts on the previous gen celica particularly the SS2 - I think it has 180 bhp but there is a surprising lack of facts figures on the net. Thanks

I would say that the Celica is a 2dr (Sports) Coupe, the Corolla had the Hot hatch covered, MR2 is a roadster and the Supra is a GT car.
I would also have said that the Celica and MR2 were dead after the SW20 (MK2 MR2??) and the ST205. IMO of course
(I thought the non GT4 versions of the Celica were the ST182 and ST202?? Could be wrong though.)

That's a Lexus Supra.
Sure,but Toyota<->Lexus,in development,is a bit of a blurry line.
Isn't it the car that Fidgits meant?

Toyota dropped the ball when it cam to performance cars. By dropping the high performance MR2, Supra and GT4, they were left with the mk3 MR2, (great car, handling, etc, but no power!!), the celica, that is a bit crap, and gutless, and nothing to replace the supra. What they need to do is plonk the 190 bhp engine from celica into the mr2, have a turbo nutter jobby rwd, or 4wd celica again, (I'm sure a turbo on 190 bhp vvti would give a huge wedge of power), and bring out a new big beast supra monster with a 3.5 twin turbo V6, or summit!
My guess, if Toyota are in fact dropping both the Celica and the MR2, is that they are replacing it with a compromise-model.
I hear the Supra is coming back, but in Lexus form, so obviously it'll have brutal 6-cylinder power, RWD, but with all the luxury and refinement of Lexus, so sort of like the 2.5-litre twin-turbo Soarer SC250 of the '90s.
I reckon the MR2/Celica will be replaced by something on the same platform. It sounds like they're rationalizing the range, so I'm guessing that they'll use the Lexus Supra platform, but obviously finish it to a lower price and fit it with the smaller, high-revving engines currently found in the MR2 and the Celica. I'm not sure how many seats they'll give it though.
I agree, actually. I think the Celica has lost its way somewhat, in that it may have a screamer of an engine, but there doesn't seem to be any focal point in the range - no GT-Four, no mad homologated turbo version or anything, and its about time they made it on a bespoke sporting platform.
The MR2, on the other hand, is fine at the moment, but Toyota supply Lotus with engines, so my only guess is that the next generation of Lotus cars will blow the MR2 clean out of the water, and Toyota will still get returns on the engines, so it'll work out cheaper and still profitable for them in the long run.
