Mitsubishi Colt CZ2 2007 gear change problems

I wonder if anyone can help. My Mitsubishi Colt CZ2 2007 has the following gear change problems: Hard to engage in 1st (sometimes 2nd), and, crunching when trying to engage reverse. A workaround I've discovered that works for selecting reverse without the crunching is to select 4th and then whip the gear lever into reverse - why that works I don't know! However, selecting 1st is more of a problem. I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

Try a gearbox oil change and see what its like then?
