Life after a Skyline...
Discussion
Hi
The time has come to part with my 155,000 mile R34 GT-T. That's the one that's like a GTR but stter Still, Rear drive, 350bhp and all the turbo noises you want. It's an excellent driving experience. It's been everything I want in a car, but the mileage is now at a point where the constant maintenance isn't practical anymore. What do you get after owning the perfect car?
Current contenders, are another R34 GT-T fresh import with low miles. Rinse and repeat. Or try something new. Like an E90/92 M3. I like the idea of another Skyline but at 20 years old, even with low miles it's still a lot of work. Maybe a 370z? Any ideas welcomed
Budget is in the 10-18K area.

I've had a E92 M3 and I've currently got a 370Z(although in Roadster guise). I think you'll find your skyline very hard to replace and I've not had anything since my S14a 200SX(mildly tuned) that has been quite as much fun overall.
I love my 370Z(helped by hi flow cats/exhaust/Stillen Gen 3 intakes though) so I'd recommend them, but being NA the scope to improve performance(if you want that) is limited and expensive.
You might not be that impressed by the E92 M3 because it is predominantly a very quiet cruiser(it weighs 1650kg) and its very muted as standard(exhaust wise)(induction wise its lovely though). However if you grab it by the scruff off the neck it is a very good fun car to slide around a little bit.
I'd personally be very tempted with a lower mileage example of what you already have, but I also agree that it is nice to have a change.
All the best with whichever way you go.

This is my main worry, and something, no matter what other options I find, I feel I'll have to accept. Nothing really compares to these sort of cars does it, I imagine the 200sx was similar. But I'm older now and a sensible amount of power is on tap with something like an M3, weight is a disadvantage but everyone says the same, chuck it around track or down a B-road properly and it's very good fun as an "out of the box" solution, it's quite appealing. Exhausts would have to change though

Yes and when pushing on the E92 M3 does hide its weight very well in fairness. The chassis on the E92 M3 is excellent too(the best chassis of any car I've had). The engine also has a nice specialness about it as well.
Have you had a go in one?
That is pleasing to hear. Have you had a go in one?
Not driven one yet, I figure until I've got the Skyline sold, I'll hold off on any test drives but shall be sure to get a go in one.
Not an easy call. I went from Japanese to German, now I'm back with Japanese. I am biased as I love Japanese cars but I have yet to drive a German car that gets even close for the overall driving experience. A lot of German cars are good motors but for me they lack character. With your budget you should get a very nice car but many Japanese cars have rocketed in value. How about an Evo, RX-7 or an Impreza?

Agree with this, I had an R33 GTS-t so "only" a RWD Skyline but I loved every km I did in that wonderful machine, every drive had me grinning it was so amazing. Unfortunately it had to go and I had to get something more usable I tried all the usual suspects from Europe I could and just experienced what wolfie said.
I would recommend going back to Japan (goo-net-exchange) and see what is in your budget that takes your fancy and fits with your requirements.
For me I went back and I got the Crown Athlete, it does about 80% of what the Skyline does but all year round. It's bulk is well controlled when hustling it but it's never going to match the Nissan - however that does mean I can now go to work in it and did 2,500km around Europe in the summer with ease, I didn't think I could love a car as much as the Skyline but it damn close.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

I've done the Impreza thing twice already I've test driven Evos, and they're boring. The problem with JDM cars is, no matter how great they are, they're all at least 15-20 years old and require constant work and maintenance. I just can't be arsed with it. The guy I bought my R34 from replaced it with an RX7, only to have the engine let go 5 days later. No thanks. I've just replaced the turbo on my R34, only for a coolant hose to let go, meaning it cannot be driven anywhere. No one stocks a replacement, so now it's at least 2 weeks just sourcing the parts.
This is why the BMW (or similar) appeals... I can walk into the dealer, they know what the car is (Nissan have no clue about the GT-T model) and I'll most likely be walking out with the bits I need.
Going through a similar process at the moment. Have owned by r32 GTR for the past 4 years, it's always been my dream car, but she is catching up with it, I've spent the same on it again in repairs in that time, it's constantly throwing up new reasons for me to consider moving it on.
I am considering something still fast and fun but more modern and less appealing to the police. I'm considering...
E92 M3
2016 era Mustang v8
New supra and a finance deal
Couple of year old STi
HSV commodore (I'm in Australia)
How do you know when to cut your losses, that's the question!?

370z are good if you feel the need to stay Jap but arent practical
Practicality isn't an issue.370z are good if you feel the need to stay Jap but arent practical
If I could find a nice boosted 350Z, I'd be all over it
